"I just don't want to step in the octagon not (being) 100 percent," he said. "I see a lot of guys stepping in there just to make money. I'm not there just to make money. I'm there to win. I'm there to accomplish (something). I'm there for the belt, to make history. I want to fight to win, not just to show up."

Belfort, who was just 19 won he won a UFC 12 heavyweight tournament in 1997, said he just can't make the type of foolish decisions he did early in his career.

"I've done a lot of silly things," he said. "I fought with broken hands and things. But I can't abuse my body anymore. I'm 34 years old. I have four or five years more in my career. So the decisions I make, I made with doctors and people in my camp that I trust and the people that care about me."

Currently, Belfort is undergoing physical therapy twice a day for the next month. It's a regimen that's as an intense as a training camp, he said. After that, Belfort said he'll be ready to fight again in December (and even asked the UFC to put the Le matchup on the shelf until then, though officials couldn't oblige).

So with UFC 141 slated for Dec. 30 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Belfort is campaigning for a slot on the card."I hope I can be on that one," he said. "I'll be ready for that one for sure."

As far as an opponent, he's got one in mind. Actually, he's got two possibilities in mind, but there's one he really, really wants."One opponent I really want, I hope Chael wins," he said. "I really want to fight him. I think the winner of that fight, me and Chael, we'd be [ready] to fight for the title. His fighting always (goes) to a decision. He's a boring fighter, but I'll make sure that fight will end up quick, and I'll give him a fight he's never had in his life."I promise that."

Of course, if Stann wins, Belfort is happy to fight him instead. But he wants that bout for different reasons, even if it leads him to the same result: a title shot.

Originally labeled by presidential candidate John McCain as "human cockfighting," the UFC has made changes to competition rules in order to legitimize the sport. And it has worked, as evidenced by recent pay-per-view numbers. Today, with stricter rules and procedures, the UFC has established its claim that MMA is a legitimate sport, and the fan base is exploding.

This explosion is due, in part, to the MMA industry's expansion to include live events (sales of UFC tickets for live events continue rise), pay-per-view, and reality television shows. All of this media attention has exposed more people to the sport and helped fuel the popularity explosion. The popularity of the sport was first evident in 2006 when an MMA event set an all-time single year revenue record, beating out World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and Boxing.

Preceding this record setting event was the Spike TV reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. It was The Ultimate Fighter that helped introduce the UFC and MMA into mainstream culture. The Ultimate Fighter showcased the best up-and-coming MMA fighters. And because it was a reality show, it allowed fans to get a look at what life is like behind the scenes for an MMA fighter. This insider's view drew people, who hadn't heard of MMA before, into the sport and into the lives of the fighters. Allowing viewers to see the training that MMA fighters endure and giving glimpses of a fighter's personal life really drew people into the sport. It was a brilliant promotional feat on the part of UFC's management. The UFC not only got a new fighter, who had proven himself against his opponents, but they also attracted new fans. The viewers of the reality show became viewers of the sport as they followed the Ultimate Fighter's journey to the UFC league.

With the success that Spike TV had from The Ultimate Fighter, they decided to start showing re-runs of older fights. This gave new fans exposure to the history of the sport and again, added to MMA's popularity. Internet gambling on MMA events took off, surpassing Boxing in betting revenues in 2007. No longer a fringe sport, MMA is now featured on major sports websites such as Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

So what's next for the MMA? The UFC brass now has its sights set on expanding to worldwide competition. The way that many other cultures tend to follow the lead of the United States makes it quite plausible that the MMA will expand its horizons even further in the coming years.

Ufc Odds And Ufc Picks: Ufc 111 Vera Vs. Jones - Sports - Boxing

UFC on Versus 1: Vera vs. Jones will take place on March 21, 1010. With the best lines right now putting Jones at -230 and Vera at +205, either of these are decent value and initially I'm leaning towards Jones to finish Vera, who himself hasn't been finishing many fights for awhile now.

Even though these are decent lines, I'm looking ahead for some match ups with better value. I'm finding them in UFC 111 on March 27, 2010. I will update all the matchups and picks each week at

Frank Mir (13-4) is at -138 odds over Shane Carwin. This is the best line on Mir right now. If you like him over Carwin, I'd think about getting in on this. In the least, you should pay close attention to this line as the fight approaches and make your move if the action starts to affect the lines. Carwin is serious about this fight, but the night should belong to Mir, especially if he shows up in the same condition for his last fight against Cheick Kongo. Remember the guillotine in the first round of UFC 107? I'm sure Kongo does. Mir wants the Lesnar fight next and shutting out Carwin will give him that chance. I'd like to see Mir/Lesnar go at it again too.

All that being said, I wouldn't count out Carwin. Before Mir showed up in shape and well conditioned in his last match, I was favoring Carwin on their eventual match-up. Shane Carwin's last win was a KO of Gabriel Gonzaga in the first round of their fight at UFC 96 on March 7, 2009. Ring rust may be an issue, but Carwin has a record of 11-0 with 6 wins by KO and 5 submission. He's undefeated and ready to make this his division. He is a serious, very focused guy. Some of the online sportsbooks have Carwin at +130 and his fans could find nice value in this underdog bet. Mir's been stopped by a strong wrestler who can throw a heavy punch...I'm watching those lines right now.

Compare this to George St. Pierre on the same card currently coming in at -800 at some sportsbooks and Dan Hardy at +569. The value on the boards right now is the Mir/Carwin match with Vera and Jones giving decent value at UFC on Versus 1 on March 21.

I start to look ahead like this if I'm waiting a few weeks for an event to happen. I start to look at the lines and watch the movement. I start focusing on what I think is good value and pay the closest attention to those match-ups. I then look more closely at the fighters and how I think they stack-up against each other. Both TVKO and SET declined, but SEG - a pioneer in pay-per-view television which had produced such off-beat events as a mixed-gender tennis match between Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova - became WOW's partner in May 1993. SEG contacted video and film art-director Jason Cusson to design the trademarked "Octagon", a signature piece for the event. Cusson remained the Production Designer through UFC 27. SEG devised the name for the show as The Ultimate Fighting Championship.
