Rampage knocked Chuck (considered by many to be the best light heavyweight fighter in the world) out. Bas Rutten was an awesome fighter in his day and has recently had a comeback fight in which he looked extremely sharp.

The welterweight division of the UFC is in pretty good shape, by that I mean it's deep with talent. There is a great champion in George St Pierre, probably the best welterweight in the world and a long list of good contenders, starting with former welterweight champion, Matt Hughes all the way down to contenders Diego Sanchez, Matt Serra, Josh Koscheck and several others.

The light heavyweight division also isn't in bad shape with superstars, Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz who fight on December 30, 2006 as well as Forrest Griffin, Keith Jardine and Rashad Evans rounding out the top of the division. However, the WFA's Quintin Rampage Jackson would certainly be a welcome addition to the mix. I'd personally like to see Bas Rutten come back and knock Tim Silvia out. Not that there is anything wrong with Silvia, I just think his style makes for boring fights. I think that Bas superior standup and experience would have Tim Silvia wondering if he really is the heavyweight champion.

Or barring that, how about a rematch between Tim (The Mainiac) Silvia and Ricco (Suave) Rodriguez. The first time around Silvia knocked out Rodriguez basically with one punch. I'd personally like to see Ricco put a better game plan into motion and take Silvia out. Ricco has excellent submission skills and good ground and pound. He's also a large heavyweight (like Silvia). I really think Ricco got caught with a lucky punch the first time in, I'd like to see them do it again. Ricco holds victories over former and current UFC contenders including Jeff Monson, Paul Buentello and former heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Randy Couture,

Yep, Bas Rutten, Ricco Rodriguez and Quintin Rampage Jackson will all by welcomed additions to the UFC. I hope that this is exactly what the UFC higher ups were thinking when they purchased the World Fighting Alliance. I certainly hope this wasn't just meant to keep their almost monopoly position in high profile Mixed Martial Arts in North America.

Mixed Martial Arts has come a long way in a very short period of time, so things could change overnight. Let's get started with my rankings.

5. Chris Leben; I think most MMA fans would not include Chris Leben in the top 5 of the UFC middleweight division, but Leben is coming off an impressive come from behind win over a very tough Terry Martin and fought a close decision loss with Kalib Starnes. I personally thought that the Starnes fight was a draw or even a narrow Leben victory.

The thing I've been most impressed with lately with Leben is his ground game. Sure, he's not at the level of Jason MacDonald or Travis Lutter yet, but he's defended very well and even attempted some submissions in the Starnes fight. It's clear after his loss to MacDonald Silva that Chris Leben has gone back to the drawing board and made some real improvements to his game.

4. Jason MacDonald had a real streak going before he met Rich "Ace" Franklin. He had back to back wins over ultimate fighters Ed Herman and Chris Leben winning both fights by submission. MacDonald had a bit of a set back when he faced recently de-throned champion Rich Franklin. This fight showed just how big of a gap there is in the UFC middleweight division, but MacDonald is taking it all in stride and a recent victory at UFC 72 over Rory Singer shows that "The Athlete" is back on track. Jason MacDonald takes on Yushin Okami at UFC 77, likely to see who will face the winner of Anderson Silva and Rich Franklin.

3. Yushin Okami and Jason MacDonald have both faced Rich Franklin, but neither has faced middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Since Okami got less beaten up by Franklin than MacDonald did, I give him the #3 spot. I think that if Okami had committed himself earlier in the fight he would have possibly decisioned Franklin.

2. Rich Franklin is defintely deserving of his #2 status. He has defeated both the third and fourth best fighters in the division and deserves to get his title rematch against Anderson Silva. Until Silva arrived on the scene, it looked like Rich Franklin would remain on top of the middleweight mountain for quite a while. Franklin took a beating at the hands of Silva and I'm interested to see what improvements he has made to his game/strategy for the rematch.

1. Anderson Silva is the best middleweight in the UFC, maybe the best middleweight in the world. Real MMA fans would love to see a bout between Matt Lindland and Anderson Silva to decide the best MMA middleweight, but since Lindland doesn't fight in the UFC we have Anderson Silva reigning supreme. His dominant performances against Chris Leben, Rich Franklin, Travis Lutter and most recently Nate Marquardt indicate true dominance. In fact, in his last 4 fights only one has gone into the second round and they represent only 10 minutes of total fight time.

Anderson Silva is extremely comfortable throwing punches from all angles. He isn't afraid of being taken down, so he allows himself to take risks throwing big flying knees and other high profile strikes. It's that kind of fighting which will both keep Anderson on or near the top of the middleweight division for quite some time. Fans love to see the big strikes and there is nothing more satisfying than a KO.

That rounds out the UFC middleweight top 5. Time to start working on the UFC heavyweight top 5, but with the departure of Randy Couture and the recent signing to M-1 of Fedor Emelianenko, that could be a real chore.

Never should a win be assumed by any fighter, but in the case of Couture's next fight, it would take a dash of naivety and hopeless optimism to believe James Toney has a solid chance of winning. Despite his impressive boxing record, Toney is 41 years old and has never fought a single MMA fight.

If Couture does get through Toney, as most anyone would predict, would that win be enough to earn him a title shot?

In the last four years, "The Natural" has fought only twice at light heavyweight. Most recently a second-round submission over a half-dead Mark Coleman, and prior to that a controversial decision over Brandon Vera. With Vera's recent first-round destruction at the hands of Jon Jones, Couture's decision win is far from elite-level stuff.

Three weeks after this weekend's fight, another light heavyweight main event will headline UFC 114, as Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans square off in a much-hyped clash of former champions. The UFC is hoping for big numbers from this event, and this fight will likely be billed as a title eliminator to add more meaning to the match.

The winner of Jackson/Evans will be a much more deserving contender, not to mention a much more dangerous opponent. There would be a good chance for a rematch since Rua stopped Jackson back in 2005, and Machida stopped Evans last year.

There is no doubt that Couture is a legend and a special fighter, but he has received more undeserved title shots than anyone in the history of the organization.

In 2003, after being stopped in back-to-back fights at heavyweight, Couture was immediately offered a shot at the light heavyweight title against Chuck Liddell.

In 2007, Couture was given a shot at the heavyweight title following a second-round knockout to Liddell at light heavyweight and a year-long layoff.

I don't think Couture will get a shot at the Machida/Rua winner, but I would not be surprised to see him next in line after the Jackson/Evans winner. After all, who else would get the shot?
