UFC 102 Odds and Picks, UFC Picks and Analysis at Bet Republic - Sports - Martial Arts

UFC 102 Odds and Picks: A fight in UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira that holds a lot of interest for me is the Brandon Vera vs. Krzysztof Soszynski match-up.

This is a light heavyweight fight that will solidly place one of these fighters on the track towards the title. While Vera looked like he was on his way in the heavyweight division once, he eventually dropped weight to light heavyweight.

He was expected to start chewing up competition. So far, he has yet to dazzle and we are patiently waiting for him to make his break here. He's 10-3. While Vera is definitely talented and skilled, we're just waiting for consistently capable.

Overall, he remains quick, dangerous and threatening. Vera's fan's know he has devastating and somewhat unorthodox muay thai and a solid ground game to round himself out. We recognize his talent and we can see the potential in Vera, we just hope that he can put it all together. Fighting against Soszynski will definitely give him a chance to show us how seriously we should take him.

Check out BetRepublic for more UFC Picks and Analysis.

On the other hand, Soszynski has had great exposure through "The Ultimate Fighter" and hasn't disappointed yet. While Soszynski's been around, but he's a fairly new face in the UFC. His overall record is 18-8-1 and in the UFC he's 3-0.

He's fought under a few different promotions, most notably IFL and had some exposure on Strikeforce. This will be Soszynski's second time on the main card PPV. I believe this is an excellent opportunity for Soszynski. His fans believe in him.

So does Dan Henderson. Soszynski's a humorous, well spoken guy that people are noticing. If he keeps submitting with authority and showing us his knock-out capability - like he did when he KO'd Andre Gusmao at UFC 98 - he'll definitely have the momentum to start challenging for a contender position.

When asked about Vera, Soszynski said, "He's probably the first person in the UFC that I'm fighting that's really well-rounded, from striking to wrestling to his jiu-jitsu. It's going to be a huge test for me, but I'm really excited for the opportunity. I'm looking forward to this fight. I think it's going to be fireworks. We're going to stand and bang and see what happens."

I expect Vera's takedown defense to be sharp Saturday night, as Soszynski is quite comfortable on the ground. I think Soszynski is showing some maturity here in the pre-fight game because I really don't think he would want to stand and trade with Vera. I think he would much rather press for the take him down and use his size and strength to control Vera while looking for the submission.

I expect Vera to look like the early aggressor and gain control of the stand-up, but I think Soszynski will weather it and get him down to control him from the top.

I'm putting another win in the column for Soszynski. Second round submission, I almost said by decision. Either way, money's on Soszynski. I like this underdog bet.

UFC, Dana White, and the foray into Social Media - Web 2.0 - Social Communities

The UFC has done a pretty great job of utilizing Dana White, the president of the organization, for all things promotions and personality. Dana White IS mixed martial arts to many fans, in that he embodies a straight-shooter attitude that so many fans are drawn to. On top of being good in front of the camera, and having an innate ability to handle media frenzies, White also can be listed as an early adopter for integrating social media into the core structure of his organization.

As far as Twitter celebrities go, White has the ratios, a constant stream of posts, and a personality that is enjoyable to follow. 690k Twitter followers is nothing to shake a stick at! Dana is also a YouTube sensation with his video blogs. His video blogs also give viewers a behind the scenes look at the UFC as a business. What this really does for the organization is enable it to shed too much harassment from dissenters just wanting to dog 'the man' for not being benevolent.

How so?

They aren't hiding behind marketeer messaging fluff, they are showing that it is a business and it needs to be sustainable. You see it when Dana records his conference calls, he is indeed a savvy businessman. So when contract disputes come into play, there is no mystery about the UFC, nor their fearless leader Mr. White.

In addition the UFC has developed a Facebook Application that allows users to supposedly vote on who of their friends could beat up their other friends. I cannot verify this though, as it appears to be broken. And also worth mentioning the UFC actually promotes their athletes online persona's and places it right smack on their homepage. Much more evolved than the National Football League, they have no misconceptions about their athletes; some of them are meat-heads, some of them are annoying, but it all makes for good traffic, so game on!

So here is how the UFC fared:

GEEK GRADE: B+

Win's

1. Dana White. This guy is a social media strategist's godsend. 2. Consistent branding presence across all platforms. 3. An understanding that athletes are who they are. And they are ok with letting them talk and embarrass themselves. 4. An early adopter approach that will enable them to reach their target audience on any emerging social media platform.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

1. The Facebook Application is a complete failure. Not only does it not work, it also is idiotic with its messaging. Cmon guys, think this through: which one of your friends will beat up who? This isn't a sport solely enjoyed by brawlers and meat-heads. Suggestion: make the application about the online gaming happening with your recent Xbox title UFC Undisputed or maybe deliver them content on their favorite fighters instead. And fellas, QA your code. 2. Bring the Dana White video blog more into the spotlight on the homepage. In fact, I don't think I even see it on there! 3. @DanaWhiteUFC should have been @DanaWhite. Offer the guy 5k and moveScreen shot 2009-10-21 at 3.56.46 PM on. Or forever face the gamut of followers missing out on your brand entirely with the one 'I rule.' post. 4. Design a better usage of the @DanaWhiteUFC page background. Cool background, but no follow through to the many channels you are connected. Design a simple callout box on the left that has i ndications of where to find you on YouTube, Facebook, Myspace, etc. 5. Lastly, when attending UFC 102 here in Portland I was very disappointed that there was no crowd social media interactions designed into the event. The Rose Garden is outfitted with wi-fi, why not have fans attending the event be given incentive to Tweet at the event? Contests, polls, whatever tickles your fancy, Dana.

Dana White And The UFC - Sports - Martial Arts

Ultimate Fighting Championship or more commonly known as UFC is fast becoming one of the most recognized sports in the world. They show live shows in over 50 countries ranging from the U.S to Australia. The sport is taking off in such a way no one would have expected. It's amazing to look back just a few years ago to when the UFC was barely known. So how did this transformation take place? It seems quite impossible! It mostly took off due to Dana White and the majority owners Fertitta brothers backing. Dana White has turned out to be the Messiah of MMA he has almost single handedly made MMA as popular as it is today. Did you know that Dana was born in Manchester, Connecticut? White grew up in Las Vegas, Boston and Levant, Maine. White is a fierce Boston Red Sox fan. During his youth, he bounced back and forth between Las Vegas and Maine. He attended college in Boston for two years but did not finish; however, while there he did launch a boxing program for inner-city childre n.White has a background as an aerobics instructor. In 1992, White established Dana White Enterprises in Las Vegas. He conducted aerobics classes at three gyms in the Las Vegas area and began managing MMA fighters Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell. While working as a manager, White learned that Semaphore Entertainment Group, the parent company of the UFC, was looking for a buyer for the UFC. White contacted childhood friend Lorenzo Fertitta, an executive at Station Casinos, and a former commissioner of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Within a month, Lorenzo and his older brother Frank bought the UFC, with White installed as its president. White currently owns 10% of Zuffa, LLC, the entity the Fertitta brothers created to own and manage the UFC.One of the best things Dana has done for the UFC is produce the show "TUF" (The Ultimate Fighter) on Spike TV. This show has taken off in a big way! It's also helped a lot of people understand the sport more. From what fighters go thro ugh training wise to see that they're actually very normal well educated people, not just barbarians as a lot of people thought. The UFC continues to grow at an alarming rate and with no end in sight, I see this sport being in the top 3 favorites of the American people within 5 years.

Watch Machida vs Shogun 2-(Watch UFC Machida vs Shogun) 2 Live - Entertainment

Watch UFC 113 Live Stream Online!Watch UFC 113 Free|(Watch UFC 113 Online)Saturday night, Lyoto Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will meet in a rematch for the UFC light heavyweight championship. Much speculation has fallen on who will be the next challenger for the winner of Saturday's match.

Earlier this week, in an interview with MMA Weekly Radio, Randy Couture stated, "I think within the next six months I'd like to be in line to fight the winner of the Machida/Shogun fight." He continued, "I'm going to be in Montreal to watch that fight very attentively. I think it's going to be great."

While basically any fight involving Couture will sell tickets, one has to question how realistic his statement is.

Never should a win be assumed by any fighter, but in the case of Couture's next fight, it would take a dash of naivety and hopeless optimism to believe James Toney has a solid chance of winning. Despite his impressive boxing record, Toney is 41 years old and has never fought a single MMA fight.

If Couture does get through Toney, as most anyone would predict, would that win be enough to earn him a title shot?

In the last four years, "The Natural" has fought only twice at light heavyweight. Most recently a second-round submission over a half-dead Mark Coleman, and prior to that a controversial decision over Brandon Vera. With Vera's recent first-round destruction at the hands of Jon Jones, Couture's decision win is far from elite-level stuff.

Three weeks after this weekend's fight, another light heavyweight main event will headline UFC 114, as Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans square off in a much-hyped clash of former champions. The UFC is hoping for big numbers from this event, and this fight will likely be billed as a title eliminator to add more meaning to the match.

The winner of Jackson/Evans will be a much more deserving contender, not to mention a much more dangerous opponent. There would be a good chance for a rematch since Rua stopped Jackson back in 2005, and Machida stopped Evans last year.

There is no doubt that Couture is a legend and a special fighter, but he has received more undeserved title shots than anyone in the history of the organization.

In 2003, after being stopped in back-to-back fights at heavyweight, Couture was immediately offered a shot at the light heavyweight title against Chuck Liddell.

In 2007, Couture was given a shot at the heavyweight title following a second-round knockout to Liddell at light heavyweight and a year-long layoff.

I don't think Couture will get a shot at the Machida/Rua winner, but I would not be surprised to see him next in line after the Jackson/Evans winner. After all, who else would get the shot?

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is likely the next best light heavyweight, but he needs another win over a big-name opponent before they would hope to sell a big fight involving him. His upcoming match against Jason Brilz isn't going to cut it.

After beating Toney, I'd prefer Couture to be matched against Nogueira to determine the No. 1 contender. That fight would have plenty of obvious narratives; for instance, Couture's loss to Rogerio's older brother, Antonio Rodrigo, last year at heavyweight. Not to mention they are both legends of the sport.

Couture is a special fighter and is used to getting special opportunities, but I just don't see this one happening after wins over Coleman and Toney.Watch UFC 113 Free|(Watch UFC 113 Online)

UFC 116 Gambling Sneak Peek - Sports

UFC 116 on Saturday evening in Las Vegas is topped by a superb competition in the heavyweight division as champ Brock Lesnar fights interim champ Shane Carwin. It'll be a struggle of brute force that ought to be really entertaining for as long as it lasts. Lesnar has bullied his way through each one of his opponents thus far in UFC betting odds but Carwin has the power to come right back at Lesnar.

Lesnar is a -170 fave at the online MMA betting sportsbooks.

Lesnar is liked in UFC probabilities but Carwin is very capable of winning this bout. He has the power to knock Lesnar out and not a lot of fighters in the UFC can say that. None of the 12 opponents to bout Carwin has ever made it out of the 1st round. Lesnar has been training to avoid Carwin's power, which he's aware of. Lesnar hasn't fought since July of last year due to the fact of a significant illness. With the power of these 2 fighters, the bount should end early, though if the bout was going to be a long one that might be a concern.

Most of Lesnar's success comes from him being at the top end of the 206-265 pound heavyweight range. He totally dwarfs his opponents and definitely leaves people who gambled against him second-guessing their choice.

Shane Carwin is unbeaten 12-0, has a lot of knock-out power in his fists, and has never left the 1st round of a bout. Carwin has beaten a couple hard opponents on his road to the championship shot.

There are 5 fights on the main card for Saturday evening. It'll be Yoshihiro Akiyama battling Chris Leben, Matt Brown against Chris Lytle, Stephan Bonnar against Krzysztof Soszynski and Kurt Pellegrino against George Sotiropoulos in addition to the championship competition between Carwin and Lesnar. The bout between Akiyama and Leben is viewed as a co-feature but in fact it's not since Carwin against Lesnar is a standout bout. Leben was not even supposed to be in this competition against Akiyama but Wanderlei Silva got hurt and had to pull out. Akiyama has said he does not truly want to be at UFC 116 in any way since he can not fight Silva but money talks so he'll be there. The one between Brown and Lytle might be a more entertaining competition. This bout may easily get Fight of the Night honors since they both love to slug it out. The fight between Bonnar and Soszynski is a rematch from UFC 110 wagering probabilities when Bonnar lost as a result of a cut.

The fighters main in the UFC 116 probabilities tournament aren't quite well known fighters, especially on the preliminary card, in contrast to some of the most recent UFC gambling tournaments. The preliminary card kicks off with 2 fights aired on Spike TV. It is Brendan Schaub vs Chris Tuchscherer and Ricardo Romero competing with Seth Petruzelli. The other 4 matches on the preliminary card have Goran Reljic against Kendall Grove, Gerald Harris against Dave Branch, Daniel Roberts against Forrest Petz and Jon Madsen against Karlos Vemola.

UFC Betting - Sonnen may not be enough, even with full mouth. - Sports - Martial Arts

August's UFC 117 is highly expected to be more of a comeback fight for middleweight champion Anderson Silva, after being booed and criticized sourly in his last title defense with Demian Maia. President Dana White spoke up displeased right after the fight, and thought of Chael Sonnen to make Silva a hungry dog again.

The lead up to the fight is stinky, with Sonnen's loud mouth criticizing Silva and friends. He even laughed at the Spider's jiu jitsu black belt, saying having one from the Noguiera's is no big deal. He's hyped up, as well as the UFC betting grounds going to the fight. But the real question is not for Silva sharpening his killer instincts again, but for Sonnen's ability to rob Silva of his gold.

Surely, Sonnen has won fights against elite fighters and even won a championship match in his route in the WEC middleweight division. When WEC disbanded the division after he won the title against a winded Paulo Filho, he shifted to the UFC and thought of having a "12-pound gold" around his waist.

But his entry was spoiled by UFC 112 championship contender Demian Maia, who submitted him via triangle choke and completely gave the bragging rights to Maia in fighting Silva again. Sonnen won 3 consecutive decision victories over Dan Miller, Yushin Okami, and Nate Marquardt, finally getting his second title shot as a UFC fighting machine.

Sonnen has his Greco-Roman wrestling background slung on his shoulders, which may not be that dangerous for Silva, after he defeated Pride middleweight champion and top wrestler Dan henderson. Other than that, Sonnen has nothing else but his loud mouth and his promise to knock Silva out, as punishment and to take the UFC middleweight championship.

Silva is expected to meet his reckoning, even after 12 consecutive wins, when Dana White established his willingness to cut Silva off UFC if he ever showed up with those tactics again. With this, the Spider will be forced to brawl and explode on Sonnen. Expect a nonstop war when they meet.

The UFC fight schedule was already finalized and released this week, and will have former two-time champion and hall of famer Matt Hughes square off with Gracie jiu jitsu black belter Ricardo Almeida to underline the fight.

UFC 117 Gambling Highlight: Dos Santos Is Next Big Thing in the Heavyweight Division - Sports

The forthcoming UFC 117 betting event on August seventh might be more of the same as we've seen the rest of 2010, which has been a excellent year for UFC Main Events.

It's apparent which of the matchups will be the UFC 117 betting event of the night, though the UFC 117 odds event is full of intriguing matchups and skilled competitors. And it is not the Main Event which is being identified as the top competition of the evening.

Everybody understands Silva will defeat Sonnen in a few long and tedious decision which will leave everybody bored to tears and little doubt that Silva is the biggest contender in existence in the MMA wagering event.

But for a real fight the knowledgeable UFC 117 betting fanatics are dying to catch is the heavyweight matchup between American Roy Nelson and up and coming Brazilian contender Junior dos Santos.

The UFC odds action heads into its next Main Event (the UFC 117 betting event at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA August seventh) with a new champ and star holding the championship after a long hiatus lacking a star in the heavyweight division.

Brock Lesnar, college wrestling champ, former WWE heavyweight champ and former Minnesota Viking, currently holds the UFC Heavyweight championship and continues the long line of star heavyweights in the UFC odds tournament.

But as there are many up and coming young competitors in the weight class including UFC 117 fighter Junior dos Santos, he may not hold the championship for long. If you're not familiar this name you probably will be after the UFC 117 odds action finishes. At just 25 years old he has taken the MMA wagering by storm and the UFC 117 wagering should be his top chance yet to display his special set of skills.

He's already compiled a quite outstanding resume of UFC betting wins and has an MMA betting record of 11-1 at just 25 years old. His only loss was back in 2007 at a non-UFC betting event in Brazil. Since making the jump up the UFC odds action he's a perfect 5-0 with outstanding wins over the likes of Stefan Struve and Mirko Filipovic. They are as good as anyone else in the heavyweight division has confronted, even if you might say these competitors are scarcely contender material, and when he mops the mat with Roy Nelson in the UFC 117 odds event he will have one more scalp to add to his belt.

Further, ranked #6 and #7 contender in world by MMA Rankings and Sherdog respectively, it is just a matter of time until he receives his championship shot against Lesnar and an excellent showing in the UFC 117 wagering event should get him one step nearer.

Dos Santos is special among UFC heavyweights in that he tips the scales at less than 240 whereas a lot of the players, including his UFC 117 betting opponent, weigh in around 265. But he is much more technically competent than anyone else in the UFC betting action and that skill set should take him far.

Watch UFC 121 Lesnar vs Velasquez Online Live - Entertainment - Television

First and foremost there is the main event, Lesnar vs Velasquez, the heavyweight champion and the number 1 contender. This fight has all the makings of a memorable championship bout. Lesnar, coming off his impressive submission victory over Shane Carwin, will be looking to improve his stand up or probably even just try to take the fight to the ground and take advantage of his superior size. Velasquez is no pushover, with his incredible striking, rapid quick movement, and high stamina. This will be a fight for the ages and Velasquez has a chance to be the first Mexican world champion in combat sports history. You won't want to miss this fight which is why you should watch ufc 121 online if you are unable to watch it on tv at home or just don't want to pay the ridiculous price to buy it on pay per view.

There is this new software that came out that lets you watch ufc 121 online and then after it ends you will be able to watch every major ufc event live. It's well worth the price (less than 1 ppv). Anyways that's what I recommend you use if you are trying to watch it online, now back to the fights.

In his highly anticipated UFC debut, Jake Shields will be looking to make quick work out of Martin Kampmann. He will be trying to make an impressive start to his ufc career since he's looking to face GSP for the title. He will have to win convincingly to show that he is worthy of the title shot.

Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago will be facing each other, and it is sure to be a contender for fight of the night. These two talented fighters both have phenomenal records and a win for either will shoot them up the rankings. Other notable fights that you won't want to miss are Tito Ortiz vs Matt Hamill and Brendan Schaub who has a 7-1 record and Gabriel gonzago, a feared striker in the UFC.

UFC 120 - Sports

Hello today I am going to talk about the next biggest UFC event UFC 120. The UFC is about two people going head to head with no teammates and doing the sport called MMA. I think that MMA is very helpful for self defense and offense. MMA is a combination of a lot of other sports including wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Muay-Thai kick boxing. I do Youth MMA because I am an adult yet, so I am still a kid. I am trying to be one of the best mixed martial artists, and I hope to continue in the sport and get better!

I really like the UFC because it is interesting to see how other people fight, and see different styles of fighting. If I see a move that could be useful for me I will try to remember it and try to execute the move. One of my favorite fighters in the UFC is Forrest Griffin, and I hope that he can be champion again in the light heavy weight class. The current champion is Shogun Rua.

This next UFC event is on October 16. The main people who are fighting are Michael Bisping versus Yoshihiro Akiyama. The event is going to be in London, England. I hope that Akiyama wins because I like him better than Michael Bisping. I think that Yoshihiro Akiyama is a better fighter, and I think that he will win the fight. I want Dan Hardy to win one of the fights because he is the second biggest fight in the event. I like the UFC, and MMA they are really fun.I am not that big of a fan of Michael Bisping. The last several fights I have seen him in he has been extremely arrogant and rude to his opponent. The thing that bothers me most about fighters in the UFC is when they are cocky. That is a problem Bisping needs to work on fixing.

Ufc In 1996 - Sports - Martial Arts

In 1996 the UFC continued its practice of Superfights in its first few events, but later made some alterations and changed back to the way things were previously. 1996 was the biggest year of all of the previous years in the UFC. There were 5 major events that took place and the fan base was growing with time and impressive events.

UFC 8 was the first major event of the year. It was scheduled to take place in February. The theme of the event was David and Goliath Tournament. The Superfight that was scheduled would be between Ken Shamrock and Kimo Leopoldo. Shamrock had been at the top of the sport for a long time up to this point and many people were wondering if anyone would be able to step up and take him out. In the tournament aspect of the event there was a plan to put the bigger fighters against the smaller fighters to see if size and strength would overtake speed and skill.

In the tournament aspect Don Frye was the most dominant fighter. He managed to win his first fight in only 8 second by way of knockout. He went on to beat his next opponent by TKO in 48 seconds. Frye would go on to take out his last opponent by tap out.

Shamrock continued his dominance in the event, winning by submission just over four minutes into the match.

UFC 9 was known as Motor City Madness. This event would feature another Superfight were Dan Severn would try to take out Ken Shamrock. Shamrock was the World Superfight Champion, but Dan Severn was touted as the Ultimate Ultimate Champion. These fighters would square off to decide who the best fighter in the world truly was.

The Superfight created a lot of controversy as it was decided by decision after a long 30 minute battle. Severn was declared the winner by split decision at that point.

Meanwhile, there was no tournament in this event. There were instead matchups that were organized in order to put the best fighters together. Don Frye once again showed his abilities with another victory.

UFC 10 would not have a single Superfight. Instead, the UFC would go back to tournament format. Don Frye was back in the tournament and he managed to take out his competition all the way to the finals. His opponent, Mark Coleman, was also impressive on his way to the final bout.

The fight would be a solid one, lasting 11 minutes and 30 seconds. In the end Frye was taken out and Coleman was the champion of the event.

UFC 11 would be an 8 man tournament and Mark Coleman was once again unstoppable. He won as the last man standing. No other fighters or alternates were able to take on Coleman in the final. He would win by default.

UFC 11.5 was also known as Ultimate Ultimate 1996. This event was considered to be a tournament of champions as many of the champions of the year would square off. Don Frye showed strong again and managed to take out Tank Abbott in the Finals with a Rear Naked Choke after one minute and twenty three seconds.

On January 22nd, the UFC will be coming to Texas to host UFC Fight for the Troops 2. This is the 3rd event that the UFC hosts in cooperation with a military base and this one will not dissapoint.

The main event of this fight was supposed to be Evan Dunham vs Kenny Florian however Florian had to pull out due to injury so Melvin Guillard, A.K.A the Young Assassin will be taking his place in the main event. This will be an interesting fight. If you aren't able to Watch this event on TV then Watch UFC Fight for the Troops 2 Online. This fight card is truly amazing.

The main event will be an entertaining one to say the least. Dunham has been very impressive in the UFC thusfar and has an 11-1 record. He is a young energetic fighter with good takedowns, submissions and striking. He will be facing a veteran in Guillard, who has an MMA record of 44-9-3. He is a takedown specialist and has fantastic striking. Although everyone was expecting Florian to be in this fight, the main event is even more interesting now with guillard in it.

The co-main event event will see Kimbo Slice killer Matt Mitrione try to defend his perfect 3-0 record against the thrashing machine Tim Hague. Mitrione has been very impressive in all of his fights, usually dominating his opponents. He is the man that gave Kimbo Slice such a bad beating that Kimbo was cut by Dana White shortly after. As mean as Mitrione might be, Hague is a dangerous man aswell. He ispat a great all around fighter and has been scary in most of his fights. This is a great matchup.

With these fights aswell as Pat Barry vs Joey Beltran, Cody Mckenzie from the Ultimate fightr return to the UFC and more, it's easy to see why you should watch UFC fight for the troops

Will My Martial Art Get Me To The UFC? - Sports

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity and ratings over the past couple of years. Love it or hate it, it looks like the UFC is here to stay. Consequently many men in the 18 - 34 demographic are becoming more interested in the martial arts.

After watching great strikers such as Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva and Houston Alexander and watching the incredible grappling and wrestling skills of Randy Couture, Matt Hughes and BJ Penn, many martial artists are asking themselves the question "Will my martial art get me to the UFC?"

The answer to this question is very simple.

No, your martial art will not get you to the UFC! Make that a maybe, instead of a definite no.

OK, I can already tell that some of you may be shocked at that one line put down of you, your chosen martial art and your UFC aspirations. After all I don't know anything about you but let me expand on my answer so you know where I'm coming from.

First of all, it is important to understand that no one style has all of the elements of a complete fighting system for success in the Octagon, but many styles have a lot of them. The UFC, Pride, WEC and Elite XC are all labeled under the category "Mixed Martial Arts." This should tell you a lot in relation to the question of whether your martial art will get you to the UFC. Mixed martial arts is exactly what it says it is - a mix of several different martial arts pulled together to create the full skill set of techniques needed for survival in the ring, cage or octagon (or the street for that matter!)

To be a successful UFC fighter you need to have a great stand-up game and a great ground game. In addition to this you need to learn take-downs and take-down defenses. This doesn't even include the physical conditioning or the mental aspect of preparing for a fight. So here are some suggestions as to which styles you should study to give yourself the best chance of becoming a good fighter.

Striking Skills: Boxing, Muay Thai, Shotokan, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, Savate Take-Downs: Judo, Hapkido, Sanda (San Shou), Sambo Grappling and Submissions: Wrestling, Brazilian Ju-jitsu, Japanese Ju-jitsu, Aikido

There are many other martial arts not on this list that are also worthy of in-depth study; and some of them on the list include all of the above skills to a greater or lesser degree.

So will your martial art get you to the UFC? Not by itself, but if you combine the strength of your chosen art with the missing elements that you need from some of the other styles above, then you will be well on your way.

For more in-depth information on many of the most commonly practiced martial arts, get my FREE "Beginners Guide to Karate". You will find out how to download it at

Good luck and best wishes on your journey in karate.

It's Do or Die for the Iceman in UFC 97 - Other

At 39 years of age many seem to believe that Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell, once the light heavyweight king of the UFC, is already past his prime. Coming from his first knockout loss the last time he was inside the octagon, the Iceman is looking to revitalize his fast fading MMA career. He will be facing a formidable opponent in Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in a match that has been years in the making.

The 205-lbs. KingChuck Liddell is one of the most popular UFC fighters of all time, and some even argue that he is responsible for bringing the sport into the mainstream during the peak of his career. He debuted in the UFC in 1998 in a unanimous decision victory Noe Hernandez. A technical knockout defeat followed his impressive debut in the hands of former contender Jeremy Horn.

Being the future champ that he was, Liddell bounced back and won 10 of his next 11 fights en route to winning the belt against arch-rival Randy Couture in April of 2005. He then continued to dominate the division by defending his title successfully 4 times in a row against division contenders Jeremy Horn, Randy Cotoure, Renato Sobral, and Tito Ortiz.

The Fall of ChuckAfter almost 2 years of ruling the light heavyweight division, the Iceman finally found his match in Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. The fight was stopped early in the very first round when the former PRIDE champion caught Liddell with a hook right on the button. Jackson was crowned as the new light heavyweight champion and this was a tough pill to swallow for the very proud Liddell. His comeback fight was at best unimpressive as he lost to Keith Jardine in a tightly-contested split decision.

This was unfamiliar territory for the Iceman as this was the first time he experienced back to back losses. Some thought the Iceman was back when he defeated the legendary Wanderlei Silva in 2007 in a match that has been dubbed as one of the greatest in UFC history. However, he suffered the worst loss of his career to current champion "Sugar" Rashad Evans wherein he was knocked out with a single punch.

The similarity of this loss to that of the Jackson defeat made some think that Chuck's style was no longer fit for the new breed of UFC warriors. Liddell will be out to prove his critics wrong as he faces celebrated Brazilian warrior Shogun in UFC 97 this Sunday.

The MatchupWhile Liddell was taking out his opponents one by one in the UFC, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua was doing an equally impressive job halfway around the world. In 2005 Shogun won the PRIDE Grand Prix tournament in Japan and some even considered him as the number one fighter in the light-heavyweight division, above Liddell. He defeated the likes of Kevin Randleman, Quinton Jackson and Alistair Overeem (twice). But that was then. Shogun lost his UFC debut against Forest Griffin and then underwent two knee surgeries.

Although he won his last fight against UFC hall-of-famer Mark Coleman, he was out of gas early in the fight prompting criticisms about his stamina and endurance. Even though this fight would have been much better if it had gone down three years ago, it is still a matchup to look out for as both fighters have their backs against the wall and will be looking for a much-needed win to revive their careers.

UFC 100 Fighters vs NHL Fighters - Sports - Martial Arts

I was excitedly perusing the UFC 100 fight card the other day and a funny feeling came over me. As I watched the NHL draft in the background at the same time, I found myself comparing the UFC fighters to the NHL's fighters. Which UFC guys and NHL tough guys are most similar? Let's play matchmaker.

BROCK LESNAR and ZDENO CHARA: The Monsters

Easy comparison here. They're both massive physical specimens who frighten the hell out anyone crazy enough to tangle with them. They're also both much better natural athletes than most people think. Your stat projections, measurements and gambling software will tell you they're just huge brutes, but Lesnar is rapidly developing in the octagon and we've all seen Chara's skating, passing, and instincts grow along with his powerful shot and hitting ability over the years.

FRANK MIR and GEORGE PARROS: The Thinkers

This is the "student" class of fighter. Frank Mir, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist, is a student of mixed martial arts, well-read and deeply into the sport's mythology. He doesn't have a badass moustache, but he still compares nicely to George Parros. The Ducks enforcer Parros has mean fists but he also writes a mean thesis; he's a Princeton economics graduate.

GEORGES ST-PIERRE and JAROME IGINLA: The Ambassadors

Everyone loves them and they seem to love everyone. These two Canadians are humble, friendly, and great role models within their sports. They're tremendous athletes who can turn from happy-go-lucky to vicious in a moment's notice. As nice as GSP and Iggy seem, they can both destroy people with their fists when they want to, as Thiago Alves may learn when the UFC 100 odds roll around.

THIAGO ALVES and MILAN LUCIC: The Violent Up-and-Comers

These guys are scary in a flashy way. They like to throw their bodies into anything that moves - Alves with his flying Muay Thai knees, Lucic with his flying body checks - and they've won over lots of fans already in their budding careers. They still have a lot to learn, though.

DAN HENDERSON and DONALD BRASHEAR: The Crafty Vets

They won't win every fight, but they're absolutely fearless. Dan Henderson's last three UFC fights were against Rampage Jackson, Anderson Silva and Rich Franklin and he jumped around different weight classes. Like Hendo, Brashear is a few years removed from being the undisputed champion. But he still takes on all comers even if he doesn't always win you money on your sports predictions anymore.

MICHAEL BISPING and WADE BELAK: The Average Joes

They don't get the same fanfare as some of the other tough guys out there, but they can sneak up on you. They come across as funny, self-deprecating, maybe even harmless, but you shouldn't underestimate them in combat. Both have scored wins over some top opponents and both are secretly among their sport's best fighters, so they deserve more credit.

UFC Undisputed 2009 Review - Hobbies - Games

UFC Undisputed 2009 provides wannabe mixed martial artists a glimpse of fighting in the octagon. It is a great game for hardcore and casual fans of the UFC.

First thing you'll notice is that the fighters are the closest representation of their violent counterparts. The game looks absolutely gorgeous. MMA fighters are exactly what they're supposed to look like. None of that down-syndrome player models that plague NBA and NFL games.

No one will disagree when we say that UFC Undisputed 2009's visuals are on par with Fight Night Round 4. Not only do the fighters graphical representation look great when they enter the octagon but after a first round of knocking each other around, bruises and cuts can clearly be seen on the fighters faces. The fighters drip of sweat and blood stain the matt after a violent action-filled round.

But THQ paid too much attention to the fighters and forgot to polish other aspects of UFC Undisputed 2009. The referee stares blankly into space and doesn't seem interested in the match. They could've done a much better job translating the action in the octagon by making the referee pay more attention to the match.

There are two major modes in the game. Exhibition mode, where you select two fighters and duke it out in the octagon, and Career mode. In career mode you get to create your very own UFC fighter. You select your fighters' two fighting disciplines: one for the stand-up game (boxing, Muay Thai etc) and one for the ground game (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling etc). Your fighter will gain attributes by fighting and winning matches. THQ also gives a ton of customization options for your fighter. You can choose sponsors on your shorts, tattoos, facial expressions, hairstyles etc.

After creating your character to whatever likeness you decide on, you simply train and fight. If you win enough matches, you'll get a call from UFC president Dana White. He will offer you fights against elite and championship-caliber fighters and will eventually give you a shot at a championship belt.

Career mode is an excellent feature because it gives a glimpse of how the politics are in the UFC but it is not without its flaws. Once you choose a weight class for your fighter you can't climb up in weight. For example, you chose to compete in the light heavyweight division, there is no way you can gain weight and fight in the heavyweight division. This hinders overall experience.

Another blow to the feature is the inability to use existing UFC fighters in career mode. This is a far cry from Fight Night Round 4 which allows players to use existing boxers and model them according to your preference. In addition, your created fighter will not age throughout the years. I guess the UFC has found the secret to eternal youth.

The controls are easy to learn but hard to actually master. A single button is assigned for different strikes and kicks. The ground controls are a completely different story. To execute and counter submission moves you have to either mash the buttons or rotate the living hell out of the analog sticks. Whether or not you submit or get submitted by your opponent feels totally random. I wish there was some sort of tug-of-war bar that shows the progress of the button mashing. Aside from all the flaws in the controls, it's responsive and tight.

Collision detection is right on point. Strikes will snap the head of your opponent and body shots will cause your opponent's body to fold. You'll also notice that the cheeks of your opponents vibrate after receiving blows. Flash KO's don't happen as often as you'd like but it prolongs the action.

The tutorial mode will prepare you for battle in the octagon. Make sure to practice first because if you don't you'll become frustrated by the way the AI cheats fights.

Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg offer inquisitive and exciting commentary. They are accurate at describing the action happening but it does become repetitive after some time. Be ready to hear a lot of Chuck Liddell ass-kissing. Phrases such as 'Chuck Liddell is the only guy who is capable of knocking out an opponent while moving backwards' gets tired after hearing it thrice per round. The crowd reactions are also a high-point of the game. They chant wildly for fan favorites and cheer for every strike that land. Overall they add realism to the game.

Online play is rather laggy and is not enjoyable by any means. Most of the time a match starts lag happens: you will most likely find yourself lying on the matt without any idea of it happening.Overall this is a great game for THQ to build on. Despite its many flaws it has solid controls, great visuals and exciting sounds. The best way to enjoy this game is playing and trash-talking with friends.

So put all your mixed-martial arts dreams on hold and play this game because it offers all-out action sans the bruises and bloody noses.

Watch the best fighters in UFC fights - Entertainment

Fighting nowadays is more than just boxing or karate. Mixed martial arts is becoming more and more popular at present because a lot of people want to see real battles as different martial artists all over the world exhibit their abilities in different fighting disciplines. The Ultimate Fighting Championship, the most popular company that introduced mixed martial arts to the U.S., started in 1993 with its first fight that includes different fighting sports such as wrestling, boxing, Muay Thai, grappling, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and a lot more. Ultimately, the UFC wants to showcase the best fighting style that is both offensive and defensive.

In the early years, the attention of different US authorities were called because of the violence and danger of the UFC fights. As years go by, the organization tied up with different governing bodies for sports, thus, new rules were formulated to make the fights more legitimate. However, the UFC was on the spotlight once again when it was banned in most US cities. At present, it draws large crowds of viewers all over the world, and a number of UFC fights were held in various cities in other countries such as Japan, Brazil, and in other European countries. Watch UFC 113 Online - (Watch UFC 113 Machida vs Shogun 2) - Entertainment

Is Brock Lesnar a Legitimate UFC Champ? UFC 116 Wagering Sneak Peek - Sports

For MMA gambling purists there isn't anything more distressing than the upcoming UFC 116 gambling Main Event at the online sportsbook showcasing former WWE champ "and current UFC gambling champion- Brock Lesnar.

The fact is that Lesnar comes from a background of pretend fighting in the WWE, and that's distasteful for a lot of MMA gambling fans to digest. Many sports gambling fans see Lesnar as a force to delegitimize the UFC gambling tournament after a lot of superb fighters have worked so hard to make the UFC the king of MMA gambling.

But beyond the questions of legitimacy of the sport, a lot of MMA fighting fans basically want to know whether this guy is the real deal or not. In fact, thus far in the UFC gambling, Lesnar has had a pretty unorthodox career. He only has 5 career UFC gambling competitions under his belt (the UFC 116 probabilities tournament will be his sixth) and yet he's currently wearing the UFC gambling heavy weight belt.

Some MMA gambling fans see Lesnar's championship as reward for his celebrity as much as it is for his ability as a fighter, compared to former superb winners in the heavyweight division. But these skeptics will get to find out soon enough for themselves when Lesnar climbs into the Octagon for his UFC 116 gambling contest against Shane Carwin. Carwin is a bit more experienced and no one doubts his abilities as a fighter with his perfect 12-0 UFC gambling track record to back him up.

On the other hand, Lesnar doesn't have nearly as extraordinary a UFC gambling track record having lost one of these 5 previous matches. But he's also beaten some big UFC gambling names like Randy Couture and Frank Mir. Lesnar's largest test yet and a superb opportunity for him to prove himself to all the MMA gambling fans will be this UFC 116 gambling contest.

The UFC 116 gambling event will also be a big litmus test for the UFC on the whole. This MMA organization has come under scrutiny of late for pursuing major name flops in order to enhance rating, namely Kimbo Slice. Plenty of MMA gambling fans see Lesnar as basically another Slice and so the UFC 116 gambling action will be the ideal moment for Lesnar to prove these naysayers right or shut them up for good.

Lesnar won his 1st UFC fight in June 2007. He registered with the UFC in October 2007. He made his debut in UFC 81 versus the UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir. Lesnar was subtracted a point for hitting Mir on the back of the head after getting an early takedown. Mir managed to force Lesnar into a submission at 1:30 of the 1st round. He's had some dubious bouts since then, though no further losses.

This fight was initially intended to take place last year during UFC 106. Nonetheless Lesnar was withdrawn from the fight after having been sick for weeks prior to it. He said at the time that he had never been so unwell in his life and it would take him some time to recover. July 3rd's UFC 116 is when that fight was rescheduled for.

Wanna View UFC 140 Jon Jones vs Lyoto MachidaOn the net Stream - Entertainment

For some time fighters tried in vain to unravel the Lyoto Machida bigger picture. Now it is Machida's turn to try to solve his own challenge - 205-pound wunderkind Jon Jones. This fight is the prime example of precisely how quickly a fighter's investment can soar or sour inside the eyes of pundits and fans (Jones' career doing the soaring as well as Machida's doing the souring, relatively speaking of course). It is educational which Machida enters this contest to be a heavy underdog. Only two years before the real-life Karate Baby was UFC champ and also unbeaten. People were raving in relation to "The Machida Era" - in addition to I didn't object. Only the experts who had christened Machida were quickly dispelled. After a 16-0 begin, the fight game's most perplexing riddle dropped a couple of of his past several bouts (to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua along with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson).

So you don't must spend much time scratching your head about why Machida enters the UFC 140 title matchup being a sizable underdog (though not nearly as big an underdog as Shiny Serra was four rice when he knocked out Georges St-Pierre and received the welterweight world title). Jones - already crowned 2011 Fighter in the Year at the Globe MMA Awards - currently represents an aura involving untouchability and unstoppability which Machida himself exuded a little while ago. Jones is 14-1, though that single pimple is incredibly misleading (his or her lone loss came via disqualification for illegal elbows in the bout that saw Jones manhandling Matt Hamill. It was a beatdown therefore memorable it had the power to send shudders by means of future opponents, making them think twice about signing to fight Jon Jones).

Jones, a New York ancient, has never come near to losing a fight and possesses never encountered even a great deal as a three-second slice of your fight that didn't attribute him essentially toying with his prey. In one regard, Jones' domination reminds me personally of Mike Tyson ahead of his 21st birthday: The only suspense that arises in the Jon Jones fight involves how much time the other guy can survive. "Who wants it more? " and "Who's gonna win? " are NOT questions you thought about while watching Tyson within his short-lived prime. And they are not questions you contemplate during a Jon Jones struggle.

And yet, mindful of the landmines that lurk after you underestimate an opponent, Jones has called Machida the most dangerous foe up to now. I don't think it's lip-service; I think the samsung champ c3300k is sincere - and also he's absolutely right. An UFC.com online poll was recently conducted which asked visitors, "How long will Jon Jones reign as champ?" The results surprised me. 31% said at least another year. 15% said at least three more years. 11% said at least five more years.

43% of voters chosen Machida to dethrone Jones this kind of Saturday in Toronto.

Now, the polls are not scientifically conducted here, meaning one person with a computer could vote 10 times when they wanted to (incorrect with a scientific poll). And I suspect that the raging nationalism and loyalty of Brazilian fans will be pushing the needle a whole lot. But perhaps fans may also be acknowledging that Machida has become the only man in the 205-pound division who is going to match Jones' unorthodox tendencies with his own equally unorthodox tendencies. Unorthodox usually means capricious, and unpredictable means the likelihood of "anything can happen" blast way up. Make no mistake, these are the a couple kings of unorthodox within the UFC.

An esteemed colleague regarding mine, Jon Anik, also conducted an everyday survey among his 30, 000 or so enthusiasts on Twitter. Anik posed the issue: Who is the 205er best equipped to beat Jon Jones?

The responses: Rashad Evans (34%); Lyoto Machida (24%); Dan Henderson (20%); Phil Davis (16%), etc.

And hey, just for some extra ammunition in Lyoto's favour, Machida and Jones were pitted against the other on the UFC Undisputed 3 video game. The results: Jones triumphed 18 instances, Machida won 7. But, as Chael Sonnen could say, "we're going to find out" who the higher man is. Titles aren't won or defended in some recoverable format, or by reporter discussions, or online fan threads, or polls, or video games. Lest we forget, Rashad Evans is one heck of the fighter. 21 wins. And the only person to beat Rashad Evans will be .. Lyoto Machida. So Machida, a former UFC champ c3300k, has been here just before. He knows what it appears like to hold the UFC mild heavyweight title, which, if ever there ended up being a hot potato involving UFC belts, the 205-pound belt will it be.

I'm very much looking forward to this fight. And it wouldn't surprise me to determine Machida pull the disappointed. But my guess is which the challenger must come into your Octagon with a few new surprises, something nobody has at any time seen before (something similar to the front kick of which TKO'd Randy Couture with his last fight, knocking out a the front tooth). It will take a number of new tricks to overcome the superior athleticism associated with Jones and his massive reach advantage (Jones' wingspan is often a whopping 84. 5 inches versus 74" regarding Lyoto. And that reach advantage is actually key for Jones as it allows him to stay range to hit and kick - without being in range to become hit and kicked with the other guy).

MIR VS. BIG NOG

Both of these people, both victims of serious accidents involving cars, are lucky to become alive, let alone sharing your co-main event at UFC 160. I've got to say i have seen plenty of super-tough guys in that sport - Wanderlei Silva, Frankie Edgar, Donald Cerrone and BJ Penn jump to mind - but Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira is the pinnacle of toughness. He is the Gold Standard, the Bushido code personified. I've never seen a man continuously endure more pain and also suffering and exhaustion from the pursuit of victory as opposed to 35-year-old Brazilian. A black belt inside judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Big Nog is unquestionably one of several great heavyweights in heritage, but there are ongoing questions about whether all those wars have taken their own toll. His chin is granite no more, as Cain Velasquez confirmed, as Frank Mir proved during his first go-round with Nogueira 3 years ago.

I must confess, I never saw Mir busting Nogueira. I had presumed it had been a bad stylistic matchup intended for him, presumed that if these people fought 10 times, Big Nog might get all 10 of 'em. In my mind . the higher quality standup: Big Nog. The better ground sport: Big Nog. Who wants it a lot more: Big Nog. So I stood in the MGM Grand Garden Area that night literally amazed as Mir abused Large Nog, put on a boxing centre and floored Nogueira three times. I ran into Mir a week later and told him to his face which i was stunned that he not simply beat Big Nog, but did it such convincing fashion.

"No disrespect, I like you Frank, but I didn't see you winning. "

Mir was 260 lbs; I weigh 146 with a good day. This was actually my first ever meeting with Mir (before either of people would start training Brazilian jiu-jitsu under renowned black color belt Robert Drysdale). So I'm standing there alone talking with Mir and being probably far more candid than I should (a negative habit of mine).

"Before this fight We questioned your heart, I questioned your cardiovascular exercise, I questioned how considerably you wanted it, " I told them. "I thought you were a small amount lazy in the health and fitness center. Very skilled and accomplished, but a little very lazy as fighters go. "

I had thought of Mir numerous had, particularly after the 2004 motorbike accident that broke the femur and threatened his / her career. And I told them what I thought, and congratulated him for producing a complete and total liar out of me or anything else. The way Mir replied spoke volumes about them. He just looked me within the eye, let me have my say, and even shared some of the techniques such as that will uppercut/jab hybrid that came at a weird angle and maintained rocking Big Nog. He was a gentleman the full time, never raising his voice, never becoming defensive. I've spoken with Frank Mir often since then, not always in deal on issues, and I've been fascinated by how thick-skinned he or she is to the criticisms that all fighter must endure. Mir is an incredibly confident man, a nimble heavyweight who thinks just like a lightweight, who can pull off of moves most heavyweights wouldn't are brave enough try. And I must point out, the big guy has come far in the gym plus it shows because now the guy can fight three rounds hard. I learned my lesson to not ever count him out. In addition to to be a wordsmith, Mir is a pc professional, and if his wrestling continues to improve, as it has, the 32-year-old BJJ black belt is going to really be able to help keep opponents guessing.

I was one on the people who thought Mir's win over Nogueira was a fluke, but I don't think so any longer. Mir is just in which good. Big Nog has merely fought three times during the past three years, but says he senses rejuvenated after three surgical procedures. The win over Brendan Schaub was one particular turn-back-the-clock moments for Nog and he's gonna have revenge on the mind Saturday in Toronto. He thinks it ended up being a staph infection which weakened him against Mir. That's what makes this kind of rematch so intriguing. Fluke or Trend? We'll find out Thursday.

Wanna Observe UFC: Ultimate Fighting Champion 140 Jon Jones vs Lyoto MachidaOn-line Stream - Entertainment

For decades fighters tried in vain to resolve the Lyoto Machida challenge. Now it is Machida's turn to solve his own problem - 205-pound wunderkind Jon Jones. Both of these guys, both victims of serious accidents involving automobiles, are lucky to become alive, let alone sharing this co-main event at UFC one hundred forty. I've got to say i have seen plenty of super-tough guys in this sport - Wanderlei Silva, Frankie Edgar, Donald Cerrone and BJ Penn jump in your thoughts - but Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira may be the pinnacle of toughness.
