Joe "Daddy" Stevenson (34-9) vs. Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez (21-2)

2008 was an up-and-down year for Joe "Daddy" Stevenson, who faced some of MMA's best lightweight competition. He was bloodied, beaten and choked out by BJ Penn in the interim lightweight title match at UFC 80. He then won back some MMA betting fans by submitting Gleison Tibau with his signature guillotine choke at UFC 86. After that it was back in the loss column for Daddy after Kenny Florian boxed him beautifully before choking him out at UFC 91.

It's tough to harp on Stevenson considering his last two losses were against, arguably, the UFC's two best lightweights. Still, the stocky, tough Stevenson is developing a reputation as a guy who can't win "big fights." That doesnt bode well for him considering his next opponent.

Sanchez, who joins Stevenson as a winner of the Ultimate Fighter reality series, is one of MMA's most talented yet enigmatic fighters. Though not considered a powerful striker, his only two losses were via decision and he now drops down to lightweight after fighting at welterweight and middleweight in the past. That means the powerful Stevenson may not have the strength advantage people would expect against Sanchez, an accomplished grappler.

Sanchez's greatest obstacle is between his ears - his losses to fellow wrestlers Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck occurred on nights in which his focus seemed off and he became timid during the most crucial moments of the fights.

Stevenson may be the tougher, easier-to-understand fighter but Sanchez has the natural talent advantage. I think MMA betting fans should give him one more chance to prove hes a lightweight contender. Go with Sanchez in what should be a very close bout.

Other fights of interest...

Both Nate Marquardt and Wilson Gouveia are fresh off impressive victories, but Marquardt should be the hungrier fighter here. After all, he had Thales Leites beaten last year before losing points on an illegal knee, and now Leites gets a title shot against Anderson Silva. Bet on Marquardt to make a statement against the strong finisher Gouveia, who should put up a good fight.

I believe in Demian Maia. The guy is 10-0 and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu prodigy. He'll lie on the ground and bend Chael Sonnen's limbs into oblivion.

Paulo Thiago, undefeated and making his UFC betting debut, is a total wild card. I'd stick with Josh Koscheck in this one. A next-generation fighter, Koscheck is extremely athletic, fearless and tough to knock out. Even if he gets caught off guard, he'll survive this bout.

The beastly Stefan Struve is probably just a knockout dummy for Junior Dos Santos, who wowed those who bet on MMA with his knockout of Fabricio Werdum in UFC 90. You never know, though, as Struve is 6'8" and could surprise. For now, make Struve prove himself in his UFC debut. Pick dos Santos.

Jon Fitch is the most under rated UFC fighter in the UFC in Fitch (25-3) who's already fought and won Thiago at UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 5 by KO (blank). The rationale Jon Fitch is not the online betting favorite is in his last mixed martial arts match at with Mike Pierce he went the to the judges score cards. Fitch is not a glamorous MMA fighter and he does not have outstanding wins but he is a professional all around UFC martial artist. Remember that Jon Fitch has faced head on top rated level UFC martial artists and has only dr opped to GSP Wilson Gouveia, and his initial mixed martial arts fight as opposed to Mike Pyle. The quantity of fighters he has beaten is extraordinary with victories over Paulo Thiago, Akihiro Gono at UFC 94: St-Pierre vs. Penn 2, Chris Wilson, Diego Sanchez at UFC 76: Knockout, Roan Carneiro at UFC Fight Night: Stout vs. Fisher, Josh Burkman, Brock Larson, and The Pitbull. Before his loss to Georges St Pierre, Fitch was on a sixteen fight winning streak everyone and anyone. He mastered them all and it proved that he could match up MMA from vantage point. The Pitbull is a proven better striker He is known for his striking abilities with 16 out of his 22 wins coming by knock out. Yes he can KO most practitioners however, if you have a look at Jon Fitch's battles he has only been knocked out once and that was to Gouveia who fights in the light heavyweight division. If you check out his struggle with GSP, Fitch was defeated on for 5 rounds. He was struck with hard shots. If you witnessed that MMA fight you could not consider the abuse Jon Fitch was receiving; yet he still got up and fought. With that kind of heart I don't see The Pitbull being able to put Fitch away. Thiago will strike himself out before he is able to knockout Jon Fitch. The Pitbull is not generally known as a martial artist that could begin the later MMA rounds but his has been able to remove guys. He's a 2nd round fighter and when he goes past the second rounds he begins to fade. He might be able to get his shots however, you can't knock out the heart of Fitch. In the 1st battle between the two Alves was taking the match and he roughly knocked out Fitch but finally Fitch turned it around and wound up knocking out the American Top Team MMA fighter late in the 2nd round. Jon dominates Alves in wrestling. Jon Fitch have the opportunity to take Thiago down thanks to his excellent wrestling. Fitch was a member of the Purdue wrestling team, a 4-year letter-man and was underneath Tom Erikson and became the team captain of his wrestling squad. He will have the take-down points but Alves does possess a good sprawl and even St Pierre had difficulties controlling Alves down once he got the takedown

The key reason why Thiago is the sports betting favorite is because Fitch had a poor performance in his last MMA fight Fitch won the battle by decision but he had a challenging outing vs. Mike Pierce at UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez. This MMA fight will likely go to judge's decision since most of Jon Fitch's MMA fights go the distance and a good wager is a novelty wager for this fight to go the distance. Jon Fitch will win this match up on takedown points and he will accumulate some shots on the ground. He won't be able hold Alves but Fitch will score the tallies. The Pitbull will start off speedy but will gas out late in the 2nd round and into the third and that when Jon will win the fight.

Shane Carwin is a 35 year old mixed martial arts fighter that participates in the UFC. He is a 6 ft 2 fighter that weighs 265 pounds, making him a part of the Heavyweight Division. All four of his fights in the UFC have ended with him knocking out his opponents. His last match was over Frank Mir. That victory helped him win the UFC Interim Heavyweight Championship and also "Knockout of the Night" honors.

Brock Lesnar stands in the way of Carwin taking the next step. For the upcoming fight at UFC 116, Carwin will be fighting for the Unified UFC Heavyweight Championship. This fight will represent the most important fight of his career up to this point. Lesnar will be no easy opponent but Shane Carwin has all of the tools that are necessary to take on any fighter in the world. If Carwin can bring everything together he will have the chance to find himself at the top of the sport.

This weekend sees the return of UFC with UFC 119 Mir Vs Cro Cop, with Frank Mir and Mirko Cro Cop facing off at UFC 119. Now I understand these may not be the biggest names in UFC, however this card has depth all the way through. We take a look at the fights, our thoughts and then we will be posting the UFC 119 results as they happen.

Frank Mir Vs Mirko Cro CopCro Cop was one of the most eagerly awaited fighters ever to enter the octagon and UFC in 2006, and although he won his first fight, surprisingly lost his way after that. Some embarrassing losses meant Mirko slipped down the pecking order, and some even called for his retirement. But after a few recent wins, Cro Cop yet again has his chance, replacing the injured Antnio Rodrigo Nogueira against Mir.

Mir has had a topsy turvy few years, in which he looked to be dominating the heavyweight division again, beating Nogueira, Lesnar and Kongo. However after his last fight and surprise loss to Shane Carwin, people are again doubting his attitude.

If this was the original Frank Mir and Antnio Rodrigo Nogueira, I would have went for Mir, and to be fair I still do. But I just wonder, can Cro Cop turn back the years and knock out Mir with a headkick? Stranger things have happened...

Antnio Rogrio Nogueira Vs Ryan BaderNot to be confused with his twin brother (mentioned above), 'little nog' returns to the octagon against The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 winner Ryan Bader. With just a couple of UFC fights under his belt due to injury, little nog is still to prove his worth and comes up against a very tough opponent in Bader. People will argue Bader has yet to come up against world class opposition (Jardine being very flakey), however for me, his natural power will pull through the win against Nogueria. Expect a TKO from ground and pound in the second round.

Matt Serra Vs Chris LytleOne of the most hated men in UFC, Matt Serra, returns to the Octagon against one of the most experienced, Chris Lytle. After Serra's outbursts on TUF a few years ago, let's be fair he never made any new fans. Yet lights out Lytle, has been there, done that, pretty much everywhere in the world and continues to improve. For me a pretty simple win for Lytle, he even has the ground game to keep Serra at bay but he will end up knocking out the midget, mark my words.

Sean Sherk Vs Evan DunhamThis is an interesting match up, previously Sherk would be a dead cert, but after years of controversy and injury you have to worry he may have lost his edge. For me the step up for Dunham is just to large, yes he beat well respected Tyson Griffin last time out, but that fight could have went either way. For us, Sherk will take a decision based on his intense work rate and start to climb his way back up the lightweight division.

Melvin Guillard Vs Jeremey StevensThis could be the fight of the night right here. Guillard has had a huge amount of professional MMA fights, and in his last few outings has looked really impressive (even with his loss to Diaz). Stevens has recently bounced back after two tough losses and for me, he should just shade this. Guillard is just too inconsistent and i think this is going to be another one of those frustrating nights for his fans.

CB Dollaway Vs Joe DoerksenCB Dollaway was hugely impressive during his time on TUF, however the experienced Doerkson will provide a much tougher opponent than what he is used to. Currently on a 7 fight win streak I really can't see anything here but a Doerkson win.

Matt Mitrione Vs Joey BeltranArgh, the actual most hated man in MMA (and I lose that term lightly), Matt Mitrione is back in the octagon for his second full UFC fight. Some may say a surprise winner over Kimbo Slice in his last outing, I am sure everyone was hoping for him to get a pounding. Beltran is a much stiffer test, beating the like of Houston Alexander in the not so distant past. Another Beltran win, and let's hope he causes a fair bit of damage on the way...

When Rampage and Machida face off it will be the ultimate battle of vicious striking versus technique and timing. Whoever wins this fight will likely face Shogun next.

With such an exciting main event it's easy to see why this event is being hyped up so much. Any true MMA fan will have to watch this fight.In the co-main event of the night, Matt Hughes will be fighting BJ Penn. Matt Hughes has been on a tear as of late and BJ Penn has been on just the opposite, the worst losing streak of his career. He's lost to Frankie Edgar twice and lost to GSP. This is not the BJ Penn everyone knows however it seems something has happened to the once feared fighter. Nonetheless, he is given a great opportunity to face Matt Hughes and show the world that he is still able to compete at the UFC level. If he loses to Matt Hughes, his UFC career may be close to over. This is a likely candidate for fight of the night along with Machida vs Rampage.

Right now, I don't believe any fighter in the welterweight division can wrestle St. Pierre, except Shields. I think this will be one of the greatest fights of UFC history and I personally can't wait to watch it.

Condit lost a controversial split decision to Martin Kampmann in his debut in April 2009, then he defeated Jake Ellenberger in another split-decision matchup. Since then, Condit has three KOs in a row over Rory MacDonald, Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim, which put him in position to face Penn at UFC 137. When Diaz was demoted because of his press issues, Condit was thrust into the spotlight against St. Pierre, who suffered a knee injury (a different injury than the ACL tear). Diaz then defeated Penn, called out St. Pierre and Condit was bumped as GSP desperately wanted to fight Diaz because of his comments. This left Condit in a tough place, but he still has a shot to earn a chance against St. Pierre if he wins the interim title against Diaz.

He has the tools to do so as well, because Condit's Muay Thai striking is as dangerous as anyone in the UFC. His flying knee against Kim was a highlight-reel knockout and he is incredibly explosive, but some UFC betting players forget that Condit has submitted 13 opponents in his career. He hasn't had a chance to use his ground skills yet in the UFC, and you can bet that he won't be afraid to go to the mat with Diaz, although he has to be careful as three of his five losses have come via submission. Condit has an excellent gas tank and his chin is just as good, if not better than Diaz as he has never been knocked out.

How It Will Play OutDiaz comes into this UFC betting contest as a -165 favorite, while Condit is rated at +135, and you should watch the line movement for this match because it could be even closer as we creep towards fight night. A lot of casual fans aren't giving Condit enough credit because they saw Diaz destroy Penn, who is known as a legend in the MMA game. But Condit has rolled over some solid competition in his own right and he isn't going to back down from Diaz.

This is going to go the distance and it's going to be a matter of who wants it more in the later rounds. We haven't seen Condit go the distance in a while, and Diaz's endurance is the stuff of legends. Condit has to end this fight early to pull off the upset, but we're sticking with Nick Diaz to win the interim 170-pound title in our sports betting picks.

UFC Owners Purchase Pride Fighting Championship - Sports

If you're a mixed martial arts fan, you're probably sick of that headline. You're sick of hearing how Lorenzo J. Fertitta and Frank J. Fertitta have purchased PrideFC from it's former Dream Stage Entertainment owners and ousted former CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara. You want to hear more about what is possible the biggest month in Mixed Martial Arts history, April 2007.

There are four shows worth mentioning in April, in addition to season 5 of "The Ultimate Fighter". These shows are:

April 5, 2007 - Ultimate Fight Night 9

This show features a bout between Joe Stevenson and Melvin Guillard. These two 155 pound fighters are at the cusp of becoming superstars in the UFC lightweight division. A win in this bout, then perhaps one more and one of these guys might be ready for a title shot. There is also another interesting match on this card, featuring the return of Kenny Florian after his beat down, courtesy of UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk. Kenny Florian is facing Dokonjonosuke Mishima.

April 7, 2007 - UFC 69: Shootout

Everybody is waiting to see what Georges St Pierre has in store for Matt "The Terror" Serra. St Pierre completely dominated Matt Hughes in his last outing, earning him the UFC welterweight belt. Serra on the other hand, barely squeaked by Chris Lytle to get the season 4 "Ultimate Fighter" title at 170. This could be an interesting match, but most expect another St Pierre blow out.

The most interesting match of UFC 69 will put Diego Sanchez' undefeated record on the line against super-wrestler Josh Koscheck. These guys have met before, but Josh was a pure wrestler at that point, he's had a couple of years of MMA experience now, let's see who's better now. Other big names on that card include Mike Swick, Kendall Grove, Heath Herring, Brad Imes and expect a great match between Josh "I never quit" Haynes and Luke Cummo.

April 8, 2007 - Pride 34 Kamikaze

This event isn't nearly as interesting as it could be. The main thing that does make it interesting is the 10th anniversary and resignation of Sakakibara, all in the same show. Expect and emotional show with a lot of "Pride Past" clips. If you're not a Pride fan, you soon will be, watching this show would be excellent research into what the Pride fighters bring to the table. Unfortunately it's being shown live at 3:00am my time, bring on the coffee! The feature bout will be Sokoudjou vs Arona. Sokoudjou KO's little Nog in his last outing and Arona is a perennial contender. Perhaps he has the most to win by the UFC owners purchasing pride. His solid ground game could be trouble for a lot of the UFC's current 205 pound division.

Pride is also featuring a freak show match between Butterbean and Zulu, personally, I'm not interested.

April 21, 2007 UFC 70: Nations Collide

Finally, the show which will determine the future of the UFC heavyweight division. Mirko Cro Cop vs Gabriel Gonzaga will determine who meets Randy Couture for the title. Look for Cro Cop to dominate this one, but as always in MMA, never count any fighter out of any fight. There are a number of other interesting names on this card. Look for Michael Bisping "Ultimate Fighter" season 4 winner facing Elvis Sinosic in a match, seemingly designed to set up Bisping for a future title shot. Andrei Arlovski will face Fabricio Werdum which could end up being the fight of the night. Cheick Kongo will try to redeem himself after a decision loss when he faces Assuerio Silva. Let's hope Cheick comes out swinging.

That's it, a great month of great fights, and I barely even mentioned the big UFC - Pride purchase. For those of you sick of the UFC - Pride headlines, you'd better get used to it, it's here to stay and will remain the big story in MMA for months.

UFC: Cheick Kongo and Antonio Nogueira to Face Off at UFC 79 - Entertainment

Fans of the Ultimate Fighting Championship can place their bets and look forward in the near future to the scheduled bout between fighters Antonio Nogueira and Cheick Kongo at the upcoming UFC 79. The names of the two combatants have been added to a list of other mixed martial arts veterans who are expected to pit their strength against each other on the 29th of December. Brian Knapp of The Fight Network revealed this information last October 1 on Monday, and he added that whoever came out triumphant in their match would most likely go on to challenge the dominance of present UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture.

Considered to be an expert of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has often claimed victory with the use of powerful submission techniques, and he has trained together previously with the National Boxing Team of Cuba. By September 26, the website MMAWeekly.com raised Nogueira's position in the rankings to the number two strongest heavyweight fighter in the whole world. He also holds the honor of being a former champion of the Japanese PRIDE fighting tournament, and one of his more recent UFC triumphs was earned in a bout with the fighter Heath Herring during the previous UFC 73.

On the other hand, his opponent Cheick Kongo is no pushover, either. A French kickboxer, his MMA record consists of 11 wins, three losses, and one draw. Kongo's official UFC record also consists of four wins and one loss. His most recent victory during the UFC came in a match against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic during UFC 75, where Kongo was judged the winner by a unanimous decision. The kickboxer's one UFC career loss so far has only been during UFC 64, where he was beaten by Carmelo Marrero in a split-decision defeat. Kongo's win at UFC 75 propelled him into a spot on the top 10 heavyweight fighter ranks.

blog post photoMauricio Shogun Rua used to rumble through pride opponents with sheer aggression. TKO's by soccer kicks and stomps. Come on! Shogun rocked people. He won the PRIDE Fighting Championship's 2005 MW Grand Prix. If one of Shogun's matches went to the later rounds he could even pull out a submission victory. In his first 18 fights only two went to the final bell and Shogun came out victorious. Both wins were by unanimous submission.

Shogun is a powerful, pressing muay thai striker and a BJJ black belt who will punch your head off or kick you on the ground until you quit or the referee saves you. That is Shogun.

Before joining the UFC, Shogun's list of victims, and I don't use the word lightly, include Evangelista Santos, Akihiro Gono, Quinton "BA Baracus, I'm done fighting" Jackson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Alistair Overeem (x2), Ricardo Arona, and Kevin Randleman. Many of these top level men were punished. This is the Shogun the UFC signed, this is the Shogun the UFC fans wanted and expected. What they got was something different.

The problem was that Shogun has knees, and sometimes they don't always hold together. Shogun's knee injury during training did not allow for a competitive camp and he lacked the fitness to compete against Forrest Griffin. After losing the first two rounds, Shogun ultimately succumed to a rear-naked-choke in the final seconds of the third round. Shogun looked exhausted. His fans slumped in their chairs and looked bewildered. I remember that. I can accept the injury excuse/reason. It really didn't look like Shogun. There was also the fact that it was his first fight under the Unified Rules of MMA, which include no kicks and knees to the head of a downed opponent. Injured, out of shape and lacking weapons. Shogun looses the match and the chance to make a first impression on UFC fans that hadn't seen him before.

Shogun's next chance was also a chance to avenge his earlier loss to Mark Coleman. This time UFC fans had a chance to see two well known fighters almost not make it to the end of the fight due to exhaustion. "Fight of the Night" or not, nothing overly impressed me here except the fact that someone actually won before I fell asleep. I was beginning to wonder if Shogun was just collecting the cheques and finishing out a contract before retiring. Then came Liddell. The Iceman was out in the first round due to Shogun's big left hook and a flurry of hammer fists. This was getting back on track, even if it was against a fading Liddell.

So the question remains, do we get the original Shogun, or the lumbering, out of breath Shogun. My guess is that Shogun has had a full camp, he's fit and adjusted to the cage, and is more than ready for a title fight. He's too much a professional and too proud of a guy to take this fight anything less than completely serious. I expect a new and improved Shogun.

I expect Machida is expecting the same.

That may be Shogun's downfall against Machida. Shogun's aggressive style is exactly what a counter-puncher loves, and exactly what Machida is waiting for. I think Machida's accuracy and timing will prove to be too much for Shogun.

Shogun's coach, Andre Dida disagrees, "For the pace of fighting that Lyoto forces, always looking for the knockout, I think this fight won't go past the third round. Shogun will knock out him in the 3rd round for sure. Shogun is going to be the unique guy to show the world how to beat Lyoto. Everyone will learn how to beat Machida so on."
