That back fist has become the staple of every MMA knockout highlight reel since. Matt has since avenged his loss to Shonie, but since it was part of the Ultimate Fighter reality series and only a two round fight, the victory does not show on his official record.

BJ Penn was the next MMA wizard to defeat Matt Serra. We all know BJ Penn. He's the rubber man, he is unbelievably talented and flexible. BJ Penn may very well have the most natural talent of any fighter in MMA. That said, Matt Serra lost a very close decision to BJ Penn. I believe that a rematch between these two fighters should be in order. Perhaps it will happen at welterweight, or more appropriately back at lightweight where I believe both of these guys are at their best.

Matt Serra's next loss is a bit iffy. He lost a decision to Din Thomas. Again, I believe Din Thomas is a good fighter, but I'm not sure why Matt Serra couldn't finish him. It's in the books as a Din Thomas victory, but if these two fought again today I am certain that Matt Serra would win.

Karo Parisyan also decisioned Matt Serra, this loss coming in June of 2005. Karo is an excellent Judo/BJJ/Ground fighter, so it's no surprise that this fight went to a decision. Basically both guys strength canceled each other out.

That's four losses, but all four come to well known accomplished fighters. Also, all four fighters are still in the mix, moving their way back up into contention for belts at lightweight and welterweight.

Georges St Pierre is standing in the way of Matt Serra taking the UFC welterweight title on April 7. I don't believe anything short of an injury during the fight will prevent Georges from winning that fight. Full apologies to Matt if he thinks I'm disrespecting his skills, it's not that, it's just that I think Georges is just naturally too big and too good a striker for Matt to be effective. Georges has excellent take down defense and good ground and pound, I believe he will win this fight, let's hope it's a good one though.

Matt Serra belongs at lightweight. This is his natural weight class and he would do very well there. I believe that Matt has current lightweight champion Sean Sherk beaten in both ground skills (BJJ) and striking. The only spot Sherk has an advantage is wrestling skills, however Serra is very dangerous from his back. I believe that after Matt Serra gets this fight with Georges St Pierre over with, he will return to rule the lightweight division, and hopefully set up a rematch with BJ Penn.

Mixed martial arts fighter Nate Quarry charged forward and took no prisoners throughout UFC Fight Night 11. Even in the wake of painful, debilitating surgery, he came back readily to the Octagon after an almost two-year recovery period. He is the first cast member of the reality series The Ultimate Fighter who also stepped forward to compete in a UFC championship, with his last match against Rich Franklin at UFC 56. During UFC Fight Night 11 held at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Quarry went up against fellow MMA combatant Pete "Drago" Sell, whose specialty is Brazilian jujitsu.

The two fighters confronted each other at the main card event, in the middleweight bout. Quarry's victory belied a difficult journey back to the UFC, having undergone a tricky but successful surgical operation last year. The treatment was for a chronic back injury he'd sustained, after years of rigorous training and preparation. In an interview, Quarry calmly explained his views on his career options and his life in general. He stated that he knew there were easier ways of making a living, though he wasn't particularly interested in figuring out or doing them yet. He then cited his childhood experiences to further contextualize his opinions.

Quarry says that from a very early age, he was already restricted by his guardians in what he was and was not allowed to do. One of the things he was held back from were sporting activities, which only served to increase his drive and interest in competing, which he describes as a hunger in himself. Like many other fellow athletes and sportsmen, he desired to push himself to his limits and see how well he would do during contests against others. When Quarry was finally able to start living independently, he decided that the only limitations on his abilities were physical, and not mental.

UFC 96 Preview: Rampage can't take Dean of Mean lightly - Sports - Martial Arts

Seems the UFC pumps out a new hot online sports betting event every week, doesn't it? Hey, I'm not complaining. The fighters get better with every card and we're seeing spectacular knockouts - the kind that make you and your buddies yell "ohhhh!" --- more often than not.

UFC 96 betting features a few veteran fighters looking for redemption and some up-and-comers trying to make names for themselves. As always, there's a least one sneaky sportsbook pick that could turn MMA betting fans into big winners come Saturday, March 7.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (29-7) vs. Keith "The Dean of Mean" Jardine (14-5-1)

Does Keith Jardine have any real fans out there who aren't related to him? For a "striker," who uses many kick-oriented attacks, he sure doesn't finish fights very often; just six of his 14 wins came via knockout. And what's with the disgusting soul patch dangling from his chin? Most MMA betting fans want to see Jardine's opponents beat the facial hair off his face, and the Jackson vs Jardine line is no exception.

Based on Jardine's recent fight history, his detractors may get their wish and see him flattened in the octagon. After all, within his last four fights (2-2), Wanderlei Silva and Houston Alexander both tore him to shreds in less than a minute. It's important to note, though, that Silva and Alexander were both brutal matchups for Jardine because they're extremely aggressive fighters who walk forward throughout their fights.

Jardine, not an elite fighter but certainly no slouch, excels against counterpunchers. Within his last four fights, his wins were big ones Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin, both of whom were counterpunchers. Jardine seized the opportunity and became the aggressor in those fights. Why is this information important? Because Rampage Jackson is a counterpuncher.

That's right - Rampage is appropriately favored at -300 but Jardine is a poor matchup for him on paper. If Rampage remains his usual patient self, Jardine may capitalize and score points with a flurry of strikes. Still, even though Jardine offers fair value at +240, picking him would be a misstep for MMA betting fans.

Even though Jardine scored big victories over Griffin and Liddell, neither opponent was in his prime at the time; Griffin was green and hadnt yet developed his ground game while Liddell was over the hill. The powerful Rampage is still at or near the top of his game and won't wilt so easily. Since Jardine can't knockout the strong-chinned Jackson, let alone anyone, and since he can't top Rampage's great wrestling on the ground, his only chance is to beat Rampage on points. In theory, that could happen since Rampage is a counterpuncher and could hang back. But those who bet UFC should remember that Rampage adds brains to his brawn. He prepares well for fights, so don't be surprised if he switches up his style and decides to walk forward against Jardine.

Pick Rampage to beat Keith Jardine, probably via knockout, and join Lyoto Machida as a co-number-one contender in the light heavyweight division.

Other UFC betting lines of interest...

Gabriel Gonzaga has the "name value" advantage against Shane Carwin but I don't think he deserves the recognition. Aside from his lucky kick against Mirko Cro Cop, he's done nothing. Why not go with the undefeated Carwin at +160? This could be the last time he offers that kind of value.

Good ole Matt Hamill seems to bounce endlessly between about fifth and 10th on the light heavyweight ladder. He loses against real competition but beats up the nobodies easily. At 5-0, Mark Munoz could surprise, but he's a nobody for now...so pick Hamill.

He looks tough and "the Bully" is a tough nickname but, boy oh boy, Gray Maynard hasn't shown he can finish a fight, with just one true knockout (unless you count the one over Rob Emerson in which Maynard knocked himself out at the same time). He's still a good wrestler, not to mention undefeated, so fight fans should stick with Maynard against Jim Miller.

Remember when MMA betting circles used to hype Kendall Grove? I ain't buyin' it anymore and Team Penn members seem to be on a cold streak, so why not take Jason Day as a potential upset at the sportsbook?

UFC 103 - Was It Really As Exciting As It Seemed On Paper? - Sports - Martial Arts

UFC 103 was an interesting card. On one hand it had some fairly good action, with lots of stoppages and not one boring fight. On the other hand there wasn't really any wars, such as say Couture vs Nogueira at UFC 102. None the less it was a fairly good card!

In the main even Belfort vs Franklin Belfort's hand speed and power was just too much for Rich. Belfort won by tko in the first round. Impressive win for Vitor and can set him up with a fight against Anderson Silva. Although he may need to win one more fight in the UFC first. Then again, from UFC's point of view, there are a few fights for Anderson at 185, but he already beat Hendo and Nate who knocked out two possible contenders in Bisping and Maya respectively. As such a fight with an exciting fighter in Vitor would make more sense than a rematch, at least to a casual fan.

Cro Cop lost to Dos Santos by verbal submission in round 3 (Dos Santos landed a punch to the eye and Mirko motioned for the referee to stop the fight.) It would appear that Mirko's prime is in the past and he's not going to ever get a title shot. It's not even so much that he's past it physically, it just seems he's mentally isn't there. Afraid to engage, and let his hands lose. being 35 and a bit slower than he's used to probably doesn't help either.

Paul Daley (who replaced Squick) tko'ed Martin Kampmann, although it can be argued that the stoppage was early. Daley had him dazed and was landing some good punches, but Kampmann wasn't really out of it.

Koscheck tko'd Frank Trigg in the first. And Tyson Griffing beat Hermes Franca by tko in round 2. In preliminary fights Efrain Escudero tko'ed Cole Miller in the first and a veteran Vladimir Matyushenko won a unanimous decision (30-27) against Igor Pokrajac.

All in all it was a good event with a lot of TKOs, though it did lack a back and force fight. It's also kind of sad to witness what appears to be an end to an amazing career in Cro Cop. But such is a life, not everyone can be randy Couture - fighting great fighters and 46 years old.

UFC Betting - Anderson speaks up, scores against Sonnen's verbal slur fight. - Sports - Martial Arts

After keeping a low profile on the lead up to the fight, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva broke his usual peace nad told reporters that he had already won against a fighter with style like Chael Sonnen, only better in Pride champ Dan Henderson.

Going to UFC 117, middleweight contender Chael Sonnen threw verbal slurs and ranted disrespect over the middleweight champion and his 11 consecutive wins, 6 of them title defenses. On these Silva has kept himself focused on what's coming out of the octagon fight, and never really on the word war being imposed by Sonnen.

But in the prefight interview with Silva, he said, answering to Sonnen's critic of not being able to fight a true wrestler, "Chael's saying I've never fought a wrestler," Silva says. "In my opinion, Dan Henderson is one of the best wrestlers in MMA." Dan Henderson is a Greco-Roman wrestling Olympian and NCAA I division wrestler.

Silva speaking in his usual respectful manner, "in my opinion, Dan Henderson is one of the best wrestlers in MMA." Silva won via rear naked choke.

That's probably all he needs to say, but with words much fewer than Sonnen's rants, it tells a lot of Silva's advantage on this fight. Chael fights with 3 consecutive wins on his back. He was also the WEC middleweight champ before it got dissolved and sent Sonnen packing towards UFC, where Demian Maia, a guy Silva toyed, was waiting to give him a triangle choke.

The UFC is always ready and willing to create more marketable stars, to bring more hype and attention surrounding their monthly pay per view events, and their other television offerings. They have succeeded with many in the past, some due to good marketing, and some have come out of seemingly nowhere to come on fire. Jon Jones could very well be the next big thing in the world of UFC, as he has set the promotion a blaze, building up a very strong fan base in the process.

The world began to take notice of Jones during the UFC 94 event, when he was matched up with veteran Stephen Bonnar. Jones won the fight by unanimous decision, although that would make it seem the fight was close. It was not. Jones did not get worn down by Bonnar one bit, and showed an amazing amount of strength and maturity to handle getting through the fight with the wily veteran.

After the Bonnar fight, the hype began, as fans have clamored to see more of Jon Jones in the ring. He is currently 4-1, with the one fight being a loss by disqualification, in a bout which he outright dominated his opponent. Nevertheless, Jones has become a rising star in the UFC, and Dana White has taken notice. Jones is next slated to match up against Vladimir Matyushenko. It is widely expected that Jones will be able to win that fight, and do so easily, which leaves us to wonder if he will be a line for a title shot if he is able to take home that bout.

It is rumored that he could receive a title shot, or at least face the winner of the bout between Rampage Jackson and Lyoto Machida, in order to determine who would get the next title shot. While Jones has certainly impressed, there are a few things he does need to work on before facing off against the big guns, such as a Machida or Jackson. His defense is somewhat suspect, for example, and he also has a propensity to go for some very outrageous, low percentage attacks, which he has happened to land a lot more of than miss.

Chances are that will not keep up forever, but if Jones is to continue to evolve as a fighter, with his athleticism, and the skills he has already displayed, it is not a long shot that we can and will eventually see Jones at the top of his weight class, and as one of the main event options for the UFC. He has the skills, the look, and certainly the support of the fans. What he needs now, is simple, a couple of wins over the biggest names that they have to offer, and then, and only then, will he be considered among the elite. I certainly would not bet against him.

The breakdown of UFC 124 - Sports - Martial Arts

UFC 124 featured one of the main draws on it's roster, and no it isn't Josh Koscheck's frizzy hair. I am talking about a Canadian fighter who goes by the name Georges St. Pierre. GSP has made simple work of clearing out the entire welterweight division. UFC 124 saw the rematch of GSP vs Josh Koscheck for the welterweight title. Koscheck used every available moment of camera time while on TUF 12 to talk about his "guaranteed victory" over Georges. Georges kept calm on the show and decided to use Saturday night to give Koscheck a clinic in "talk is cheap".

GSP, a re wrestler, had been working with famous boxing trainer Freddie Roach leading up to his bout with Josh Koscheck. I would say that this was money well spent considering that St Pierre used his speedy jab to basically shut the right eye of Koscheck. Now, since this fight didn't display much jiu jitsu, we will go on, but I do want to use this fight as a wonderful example of how under used the jab is in MMA. To many MMA practitioners in MMA use the windmill method when it comes to throwing fists. Hopefully, after seeing this, more fighters will realize it's significance and spend some time in the gym working the jab with their trainers. It probably doesn't hurt to have Freddie Roach there to give you some suggestions either.
