BlueGrace® Logistics Sponsors Six Fighters in UFC® March 2 Matchup - Marketing - Brand Marketing

Tampa's BlueGrace Logistics' involvement in sponsoring MMA fighters for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bouts continues with ongoing support of main event fighter Thiago "Pitbull" Alves as he takes on Martin Kampmann in a welterweight division matchup. BlueGrace is also sponsoring fighters Mackens "Da Menace" Semerzier, Daniel "The Pit" Pineda, Andrew Craig, Cole "Magrinho" Miller and Nick "The Quiet Assassin" Penner. The packed-card event will take place Friday, March 2 at the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia.

Alves, who is coming off of a November 2011 win with a first round submission over Papy Abedi, may have an opportunity to move closer to an eventual shot at the title again if he defeats Kampmann. In addition to this exciting main event, the other fights all promise to showcase the talents of the BlueGrace sponsored fighters.

"This particular fight card is very exciting as the BlueGrace sponsorship combines fighters such as Thiago and Mackens, who we've previously sponsored, with upcoming new talent in the sport. These fighters exemplify many of the attributes integral to our success in the transportation logistics business, including leadership, discipline and determination," said BlueGrace CEO and President Bobby Harris. "We are proud to have all of these individuals as part of the BlueGrace Logistics family."

MMA is one of the fastest growing sports today and BlueGrace has a number of customers across the nation who are fans, as well as corporate employees who enjoy the sport. Thiago Alves and other MMA stars such as UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit often visit the BlueGrace headquarters for career fairs and onsite broadcast interviews on WTAN Sports Radio, providing a level of engagement for customers who frequently visit the headquarters as well. In addition, many of the fighters are highly engaged with social media, using forums such as Twitter as an opportunity to connect with the BlueGrace team and generate excitement about both brands.

BlueGrace Logistics is one of the fastest growing and most progressive providers of transportation, logistics and technology solutions to businesses and individuals nationwide, serving more than 2,500 customers in 60 cities. In addition to its March 2 sponsorships, the company has also previously sponsored such MMA fighters as UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit, UFC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson, Donald Cerrone, Roy Nelson, Johny Hendricks, Vagner Rocha and Pat Barry.

The Story Of The Ultimate Fighting Championship, Part 2 - Sports

The UFC was on the verge of its demise with no rules, no audience, no cable access and U.S. Senators calling for its break-up. It was time to step back and re-evaluate the situation. People are interested in the idea of MMA, but not in seeing the type of fight that has 2 fighters fighting in pools of their own blood. The first step was to add protective rules. Weight classes were introduced - heavy weights, middleweights and lightweights. The number of unacceptable striking areas on the body were increased to include the back of the neck, pressure points areas and the back of the head. Protective gloves were mandatory and there were now 5-minute rounds, all of which helped the UFC legitimately begin calling itself a sport, rather than an underground cage fight.

After the organization cleaned up the fights, it was time to start getting officially recognized by fighting associations. The improved image played well with the athletic commissions, as did the petitions for sanctioning made by other clean MMA organizations. It wasn't until September 30th of 2000 that the International Fighting Championships hosted the first MMA sanctioned event in New Jersey. 2 months later it was the UFC's turn. Their first sanctioned event also took place in New Jersey under the State Athletic Control Board's "Unified Rules". The Ultimate Fighting Championships had lost legal battles and suffered financially, but now it was a legitimate sport.

The time seemed right for new leadership. Two casino executives and a boxing promoter placed and won a bid to buy the UFC for $2 million in 2001. That same year, the organization successfully secured the sanctioning of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and returned to Pay-per-view. Slowly but surely, popularity was growing. It gained a spot on Fox Sports Net, which aired it as the first American mixed martial arts match in 2002.

Today.

Thanks to better promoting, bigger ticket events and the necessary funding, the UFC aired its own reality TV show on Spike TV called The Ultimate Fighter. It was slotted just after a large wrestling event and the UFC show quickly rose to the top for the station. Spike TV then began airing promotional half-hour teaser shows to promote UFC pay-per-view events. All of the widespread attention exploded its popularity. In 2006, the massively hyped event UFC 61 earned near 775,000 pay-per-view buys, the second highest in US history. The UFC, it seems, has officially arrived.

So what's next for the growing organization? They're thinking about expanding internationally. First stop: Mexico.

Chuck Liddell - The Iceman Of Mma, Part 2 - Sports

Chuck Liddell is considered one of the most dangerous men in the UFC. This is partly due to his unconventional fighting style. Liddell is trained in Karate-Do, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, wrestling and kickboxing. He holds a black belt and is very dangerous both on his feet and on the mat. Liddell fights in a very relaxed style that is disconcerting to his opponents and makes his actions hard to anticipate.

His "hands down" approach to fighting makes for intense and exciting fights. This has contributed greatly to his popularity in the sport of mixed martial arts among the many fans. Liddell is one of the most widely recognized and well liked competitors in the UFC. Liddell has supreme knockout power that ensures that the majority of his victories are won by knockouts rather than by the judges' decision.

When the UFC launched their reality series in 2005, titled The Ultimate Fighter, Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture were chosen to be coaches for the two teams of up and coming mixed martial arts fighters. At that time, Randy Couture held the belt for the light heavyweight division, and Liddell was promised a shot at the belt following the conclusion of the reality series.

Both of the finalists from The Ultimate Fighter were members of Team Liddell and were given contracts to fight with the UFC. Diego Sanchez and Forrest Griffin were the winners of the reality series and both went on to make a name for them with the UFC. Liddell was indeed granted a fight to Couture where Liddell won in a first round knockout, and Couture subsequently retired.

Part of Liddell's widespread recognition in the UFC is due to his media coverage. Liddell is a poster child for one of the top sponsor's of the UFC, Xyience Energy Drinks. Liddell was also the first UFC fighter to appear on the cover of ESPN Magazine. He has since founded his own clothing brand and made appearances on several TV talk shows and magazine covers. Chuck Liddell doesn't plan on going anywhere and intends to keep fighting in the UFC.

Baby Face Assassin Taking Aim? - Sports

Josh "Baby Face Assassin" Barnett is targeting Randy Couture after his successful title defense over Gabriel Gonzaga this past weekend at UFC 74. On his MySpace Blog, Barnett wrote the following:

"UFC Heavyweight title? Not in my eyes. Current mood: angry Category: Sports

Let's get straight to it and say that Randy did a phenomenal job at UFC 74 in defending his title. As a fan and a fellow Washingtonian I was happy to see him win. But as for the title itself -- it still sits in my house. No one in UFC ever beat me for it, and as far as I am concerned, no one in the UFC can be the heavyweight champion until they take that belt off of me in the cage.

At the post fight press conference, Dana White said "there isn't anyone in the world that can beat this guy" in reference to Randy. All this because Randy beat a guy that had less than ten fights and only one noteworthy win? That's not even a world championship level fight, let alone reason to proclaim the winner as "unbeatable". This comment was made even more ridiculous by the fact that I was standing right there, living proof that Randy Couture is definitely beatable.

"Unbeatable", Dana says. If he actually believes that, I'm more than willing to step into the cage and prove him wrong. It wouldn't even have to be for the belt. I already got the real belt. They can keep their pile of brass they purport as the UFC Heavyweight Title and put it on their next paper champ."

From the looks of it, Barnett is trying to make his way into the UFC since the UFC never really offered him a contract after ZUFFA purchased PRIDE earlier this year. I don't think that the UFC has any real need for Barnett at the moment since their Heavyweight division is already loaded with talent. It'll be interesting to see how Randy responds to this if at all.

Fedor Signs! With Affliction - Sports

Fedor Emelianenko has finally signed! With Affliction that is, while the UFC and Fedor's management continue to find a way to finalize a deal with the top MMA fighter in the world, Affliction has signed Fedor Emelianenko as their next MMA fighter to promote their clothing line. We were recently at UFC 74 in Las Vegas where I would venture to say that 30% of the crowd in the Mandalay Bay Events Center was wearing the popular Affliction T-Shirts.

This is a pretty big announcement that hasn't gotten a lot of press because fans are currently sick of hearing about Fedor and the UFC's issues with their contract negotiations. On that note though, according to the most recent Beatdown on Sherdog, it was said that the only issue with the contract is Fedor's desire to continue his Sambo fighting. The UFC has always wanted their fighters to be exclusive to the organization, so it will be interesting to see what ends up happening in the next week which is when everyone believes a decision will be made.

Fedor will be attending UFC 75, but not for the reasons you may believe. He still isn't signed, so the UFC won't announce him but don't be surprised if they show him on camera to start getting fans accustomed to his face. Instead, Emelianenko will be in attendance at the O2 arena to promote the Affliction clothing line.

Tim's Take: I think Mark Cuban's offer for HDNet's MMA is a lot more serious than many MMA fans and news sites believe. Mark Cuban is as good as a negotiator as Dana White is for the UFC. This guy single handedly saved the Dallas Mavericks' NBA Team from mediocrity and is a self made billionaire. He goes toe to toe with the NBA Commissioner David Stern all the time, and he's not afraid to be blunt. If the UFC can't close a deal with Emelianenko by UFC 75 this Saturday, then Emelianenko will probably sign with Mark Cuban's MMA deal that he has going on, and that'll allow Cuban to sign other top fighters like Josh Barnett and possibly Mark Hunt. Mark Cuban has money, and he's not shy about using it.

Top 5 Most Overrated Mixed Martial Arts Stars - Sports - Martial Arts

Mixed martial arts has exploded in the last decade. Now everyone and their dog think they can fight, grapple, wrestle and strike like a UFC champ. There are so many arm chair MMA fans now it is not even funny. What's even worse is the way marketing has creeped into MMA.Every company wants to hitch their wagon to a fighter with "charisma", but which five have gotten the biggest push without the pedigree or skills to back it up?

5. Michael "The Count" Bisping (18 Wins, 2 Losses)

Even though "The Count" is one of the most popular and dangerous fighters to step into the UFC octagon from the United Kingdom, his legitimacy as a top-contender and a headliner should be questioned. Bisping's impressive striking and mind-games may have won over fans, but he has never defeated an elite fighter. His two chances to prove he was a top-contender in both the light-heavyweight division and in the middleweight division failed miserably when he lost to Rashad Evans (unanimous decision) and Dan Henderson (knockout). Aside from the occasional highlight-knockout, the only reason Michael Bisping is popular is because he is the poster-boy for the UFC in the United Kingdom.

4. Rich "Ace" Franklin (25 Wins, 6 Losses and 1 No Contest)

After his victory over Ken Shamrock at the TUF 1 Season Finale, his popularity increased tenfold and he went on to become the UFC Middleweight Champion. What most UFC fans didn't realize at the time was that Shamrock's career was winding down long before Franklin knocked him out, so even though it seemed like knocking out Shamrock was a huge feat, it wasn't as big of a deal everyone made it out to be. His reign as UFC Middleweight Champion, while impressive, was also questionable as he was matched up against subpar opponents. As soon as Franklin stepped into the octagon with the upper echelon of fighters (Anderson Silva, Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort) his skills, or lack thereof, were exposed.

3. Cung Le (6 Wins, 1 Loss)

After his 2008 fight of the year contender against Frank Shamrock, Cung Le skyrocketed to superstardom. As a matter of fact, because Mirco Cro Cop made the transition from PRIDE FC to the UFC many fans were saying Cung Le was the owner of the most dangerous kicks in mixed martial arts. As we saw in his last fight against Scott Smith (who is 1-4 in the UFC), it's evident his kicks are more "flashy" than "dangerous". Le's offense was strong and quick, but he relied too heavily on his kicks which simply did not have the knockout power he was looking for and was not able to knockout Smith when he had several chances to do so. His performance against Scott Smith was one of the biggest letdowns for Strikeforce and opened a lot of eyes.

2. Clay Guida (25 Wins, 11 Losses)Clay Guida has been paired against numerous contenders to BJ Penn's Lightweight Championship, but he has never been a contender himself. Despite that, he still remains as one of the lightweight division's most popular fighters. Dana White realized that Guida's wild style of fighting will never truly amount to great success and that nobody will ever buy a pay-per-view just to see him, but they will tune into Spike TV to see him fight for free. This is where two stars are born at once: the victor (usually Guida's opponent) moves onto pay-per-view to fight Penn, and Guida gains an incredible amount of popularity by pulling in fans who are new to MMA because his fights are exciting and his trademark mane. Long story short, Clay Guida is the glorified stepping stone of the lightweight division.

1. Kimbo Slice (4 Wins, 1 Loss)

Throughout his five-fight career, Kimbo Slice has already been featured in three main events, one co-main event, and starred on the tenth season of the Ultimate Fighter where he was easily the most advertised fighter in the history of the show... all because he was the star of backyard fighting videos. Elite XC made an illusion that Kimbo Slice was unbeatable, but that illusion was ruined when Seth Petruzelli knocked Kimbo Slice out in fourteen seconds. Kimbo Slice definitely has the knockout power to finish fights, but that's all he has going for him; he is a one dimensional fighter. Whenever he is taken to the ground, he as no offense or defense. Like a fish out of water, he is not familiar with that world and he starts flopping around hoping he can get back to his feet. Sure to be at the top of everyone else's list, Kimbo Slice deserves to be the most overrated fighter in mixed martial arts history.

MMA - Profile MMA fighter Anderson Silva - Sports - Martial Arts

Anderson Silva is a Brazilian MMA fighter who has made quite a name for himself in the mixed martial arts world. He was born on April 14, 1975, and is a Brazilian fighter who has competed in a variety of different venues from amateur leagues to the UFC. Some of his major accomplishments include being the UFC Middleweight Champion, the Cage Rage World Middleweight Champion, and also the Shooto Middleweight Champion. He weighs around 185 pounds and is largely considered one of the greatest middleweight fighters in the sport. He has mastered his skills in Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, but has an arsenal of other techniques and fighting styles under his belt.

Anderson Silva's mixed martial arts career first began in Brazil when he fought in the Mecca Organization. He lost his very first official fight but then went on to win the next nine and even defeated the current Shooto champion of that time, Hayato Sakurai. After this small but successful Brazilian stint, he moved into the PRIDE Fighting Championships in 2002. Silva won his first three fights in this league but in PRIDE 26 he lost to Daiju Takase when he got a good strangle hold on him. After that loss he went through a few other promotions until he joined the Cage Rage promotion that was held in England. There during Cage Rage 8, he fought UFC veteran Lee Murray and defeated him by decision. He went back and forth between the PRIDE and Cage Rage promotions with a mixed record of wins and losses until he finally signed with the UFC in the mid 2000's.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship would prove to be a good move for Anderson Silva. After signing with the UFC, Silva would already start to be promoted as a favorite to win the Middleweight title. He fought his first match in the Ultimate Fight Night 5 which was held on June 28, 2006. He would fight Chris Leben who had been undefeated since he entered the league through the Ultimate Fighter 1 challenge. Silva would surprise the UFC by taking out Leben with a series of strikes and a final knee to put him away. After this commanding win, the UFC took a poll to see who the fans wanted Anderson Silva to fight next. The voters picked the then current UFC Champion, Rich Franklin, and Silva was given the chance to fight him later that year.

On October 14, 2006, at UFC 64, Rich Franklin and Anderson Silva entered the ring. After a short round, Silva came out victor with a TKO. It was here that Silva was named Middleweight Champion and where his career really began to take off. Later in February of 2007, Silva would win another convincing victory against Travis Lutter, who was the Ultimate Fighter Season 4 winner. He would win by submission because of his powerful strikes.

Throughout his career, Silva has proven to be one of the best strikers in the sport and has shown that with some impressive wins against some fierce competitors.

Top 10 best MMA pound for pound fighters - Sports - Martial Arts

It has been a slow start for MMA's pound-for-pound elite in the year 2010. Moreover, the first time a divisional leader stepped into the cage this year, spoilage was on the menu.

Brian Bowles quickly, deftly climbed from rung to rung in the bantamweight division, rolling over all challengers, culminating in his sensational August knockout of Miguel Torres to take the World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight title. However, his reign atop the division and tenure on this list were short-lived. In his first defense on March 6, Bowles had no offense and no answer for upstart Dominick Cruz, who ducked, dodged, jabbed and kicked his way to two lopsided rounds before Bowles bowed out with a broken hand before Round 3.

The weeks ahead, however, will put the MMA pound for pound community on display more prominently. That's eight of the 10 men on this list in action over the next six weeks. How truly spoiled we are.

Anderson SilvaAs Zuffa knows all too well, booking the MMA pound for pound king of the sport is difficult. Silva may be the toughest man for whom to find challenges in MMA, and it's often reflected by fans and journalists alike writing off his opponents months before they ever set foot in the cage with "The Spider." On the flip side, it ensures that even when disaster strikes, we get an elite-level replacement. With Vitor Belfort going down to a shoulder injury, Silva's next title defense at UFC 112 on April 10 in Abu Dhabi will now come against fellow Brazilian Demian Maia, who steps in for "The Phenom." It is a seamless transition from top-10 opponent to top-10 opponent and will provide Silva yet another opportunity to build on his hefty list of victims.

Georges St. PierreIn his last three bouts, St. Pierre squared off with Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn and then Thiago Alves. Coincidentally, all three of those fighters appear on this list. When one's rsum is replete with pound-for-pound entrants, it's hard for future opposition to measure up. Such is the case with British standout Dan Hardy, who has put together four quality wins in the UFC and established himself as a bona fide top-10 welterweight. In spite of that, spectators are typically down on Hardy's chances at UFC 111 on March 27 and see the bout as little more than a tune-up for St. Pierre. However, it remains to be seen if the power of propaganda can change public opinion, as the bout is the subject of the second edition of "UFC: Primetime," which proved instrumental in hyping the St. Pierre-Penn rematch last year.

Fedor EmelianenkoEmelianenko was supposed to embark on his next conquest for Strikeforce in April, after he wiped out Brett Rogers in thrilling fashion in the promotion's November CBS debut. However, a contract impasse between Strikeforce and M-1, Emelianenko's representation, put the brakes on his appearance, which now looks more likely for June or July. In some ways, the delay may be a blessing in disguise. It will not buy Strikeforce a world of time, but if Emelianenko had fought and knocked off Fabricio Werdum as anticipated in April, it would have left the Russian with one last obvious foil -- Alistair Overeem -- as we entered the summer. Now, the obvious end of Strikeforce's short heavyweight gallery is further off.

Lyoto MachidaAfter ripping through Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans in consecutive bouts in 2009, Machida had already ignited complaints about the inability of other light heavyweights to challenge him before he had even defended the UFC title. His October bout with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vividly showed once again the folly of proclaiming any MMA fighter unbeatable, as Machida's unanimous decision victory became the most debated and unpopular decision of the year. With the Rua rematch slated for May 8 at UFC 113 and a growing number of highly gifted 205-pound prospects in MMA, Machida's road to dominating the light heavyweight division has quickly become a much tougher task than previously anticipated for the proud karateka.

B.J. PennFor the first six years of B.J. Penn's MMA career, fans simply wanted to see him focus his attention on being the dominating lightweight he could be, instead of pursuing challenges up and down the scale. Over the last three years -- one detour against Georges St. Pierre aside -- he has, blowing out the likes of Joe Stevenson, Sean Sherk, Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez. Quickly, even those who wanted to see Penn lord over the lightweights have started to question if there are any challenges to be had for Penn. At UFC 112 on April 10 in Abu Dhabi, Penn will enter his next UFC title defense against Frankie Edgar as a prohibitive favorite. After the bout, it is likely the drumbeating for Penn at 170 pounds will only increase in volume.

Jose AldoSince his World Extreme Cagefighting debut in June 2008, Aldo is 6-0 with six stoppages, including four in 2009 alone. It is little wonder that the hottest thing out of the Amazon jungle was Sherdog.com's Fighter of the Year for '09. However, Aldo's brilliant campaign last year leads to a harder road from here on out. Aldo will now be tasked with defending his title against the top featherweight challengers the WEC has to offer, fight in and fight out. It starts with former champion Urijah Faber at WEC 48 on April 24 in front of a highly partisan Sacramento, Calif., crowd that will want Aldo to lose and lose badly. We will find out shortly if Aldo is truly set to become MMA's first featherweight superstar.

Jon FitchIf MMA were football, Fitch would be running a jumbo formation for 3 yards a carry and winning by a field goal. To say that Fitch's no-frills, top-position grappling has worn the patience of many MMA onlookers would be an understatement. However, there remains the fact that in the last seven years, he has lost once -- to Georges St. Pierre of all people. His record in that time? Nineteen wins against one loss, with 11 of those wins in the Octagon against elite opposition. Fitch will have the chance to fortify his rsum even further on March 27, in his rematch with Brazilian Thiago Alves, whom he stopped in June 2006.

Mike Thomas BrownThe world has fallen so deeply in love with Jose Aldo that the featherweight reign of Mike Thomas Brown seems like five years ago, not five months ago. While it will be the man Brown conquered twice in his biggest wins, Urijah Faber, who next challenges Aldo for the 145-pound throne, Brown will find a home on the same WEC 48 card -- the promotion's first on pay-per-view. In order to rise back up the ladder for a chance to regain the WEC crown, Brown will have to deal with fellow UFC veteran Manny Gamburyan, who is 2-0 since dropping to the more physically appropriate 145-pound division.

Thiago AlvesAlves' place in the MMA world reminds us of why context is important. In his last bout, he struggled to win a single minute of 25 against welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre. However, apart from his loss to St. Pierre, Alves smashed outstanding welterweights left, right and center and arguably had a better 2008 campaign -- weight issues against Matt Hughes aside -- than any other fighter in the sport. As we wade deeper into 2010, Alves will have the chance to solidify himself as one of MMA's super elite at UFC 111 on March 27 in his rematch with Jon Fitch, who bested him in June 2006. The fight will crown the second-best fighter in one of MMA's richest, most competitive weight classes.

Shinya AokiIn the last three years, Aoki has fought 15 times. In those bouts, he has picked up wins over the likes of Akira Kikuchi, Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante, Caol Uno, Eddie Alvarez, Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro, Joachim Hansen and Mizuto Hirota. Yet, despite one of MMA's deepest dockets and a staggering highlight reel of submissions, Aoki remains one of the sport's most polarizing fighters, largely due to his over-the-top and often petulant persona. However, the 26-year-old grappling ace will have the chance to silence doubters on April 17, when he challenges Gilbert Melendez for Strikeforce's lightweight crown in his stateside debut.

Martial Arts Training and Self Defence Training: A Revival for Survival - Sports - Martial Arts

It seems that martial arts is no longer something that appears in Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, or Steven Seagal movies (the latter squinting more arbitrarily than his nationality seems to actually provide). It seemed that being a ninja or "karate master" was no more than something regarded as fantastical or else a childhood phase up until somewhat recently when it gained more mainstream acceptance via the UFC, which is much more realistic than wrestling and less sleepy than boxing; you won't see UFC fighters mimicking slow-dancing prom dates in any match, even the ones that endure longer than such brutality calls for. UFC fighters are at the highest technical caliber a fighter can reach, being trained to do more than simply punch or simply pin. No, extensive martial arts training is required of any UFC fighter that wants to survive in a caged setting with another behemoth and no rules, other than "no eye-gouging."

Murder isn't strictly prohibited; therefore, extensive self defence training provides the measures that ensure survival and, beyond that, an incapacitated opponent.

Such a stimulating form of pugilism seems like boxing with no limits, but those limits do exist in the form of martial arts training. They are the same skills that kids attempted to achieve that allowed them the mind-blowing ability to break cinder blocks with the edge of their hands, but to a more extreme degree as those same kids ever considered breaking a face instead. UFC takes the romanticized techniques and overcoating that make martial arts an artform and simply removes all the beauty; in fact, UFC, and its fighters consequently, is a very ugly sport and is why men can consume it without sacrificing their masculinity. Unabashed, legal violence will always be popular with the American masses.

The violence in UFC does appear mindless, on the surface, but it really involves a lot of strategy. Considering it involves more than just blocking punches, there is a rudimentary sophistication to the techniques that make such fights last longer than ten seconds. Martial arts training provides the fighter with an outfit of techniques to employ but also ones to anticipate. In-depth self defence training gives the fighter a sort of mental recall list of attacks which are stored and tailored to the appropriate counter-attack. They training is more reflexive than anything else, muscle-memory recall being the basis of survival in the ring. Memory is most important, and it is a great hope that the fighter's head doesn't take so hard of a beating that his cognitive abilities become inert and no longer serve a functioning role. This is less a fear, and more of an expectation, in boxing.

Never let anyone tell you that UFC is barbaric, for that is only what appears on the bloody surface. Real fans of UFC, as well as practitioners, will verify the complexity that underlies the sport. Of course defending masculine authority through sheer physical and brutal means typify the very idea of barbarianism, but that term really only applies to the people who watch UFC matches just because it makes them feel tough. The Karate Kid was by no means ever tough; he received self defence training from a wise, not to mention frail, old man, and went on to become not just a bully-thwarter, but a fictional champion. Such inspiration.

Rampage Jackson looking to take out Jon Jones - Sports

Rampage Jackson knows how to sell a fight. His big personality and even bigger resume bring a ton of draw to his upcoming UFC Light Heavyweight title fight at UFC 135. He's called out Jon Jones for being cocky and still shows the confidence needed to re-gain the championship belt. "Him and Rashad (Evans) got something in common. They're both really cocky. I'm confident, very confident in myself. There's a difference," Rampage Jackson said at the prefight press conference. "Last time I was this confident, I knocked someone (Chuck Liddell) out in the first round and got that belt. I've been working hard, training and doing all the right things, all the stuff I need to be doing. That belt's coming back to me, for real."Jackson captured the title on May 26, 2007 when he defeated Keith Jardine at UFC 71. In his very next fight Rampage became the first fighter to merge the UFC and Pride championships when he took down Pride Middleweight Champion Dan Henderson. Rampage is certain he can return to championship form with a win over Jones, even at age 33. "I'm only 33. Goodness. You all act like I'm Randy Couture's decrepit old ass," Rampage Jackson said. "You know, if I have to represent the old school, I guess I'll represent them. I guess I'm old school, but with old school comes a lot of experience. He's the youngest champion, but I think (Jones is) the least experienced champion in UFC history."Rampage is set to expose that inexperience when he and Jones come to blows. The fight will mark Rampage's 41st professional fight, and he undoubtedly holds the experience advantage over Jon "Bones" Jones. Is going to be an excellent battle. But it's been a while since Rampage Jackson has been in championship form. While he defeated Matt Hamill at UFC 130 and Lyoto Machida at UFC 123, Jackson lost to Rashad Evans at UFC 114 and hasn't fought for the UFC light heavyweight title since losing it to Forrest Griffin in July of 2008. That's a long time to be gone w hen fighting competition of such a high caliber. After defeating Wanderlei Silva and Keith Jardine in back-to-back fights, Quinton Rampage Jackson announced that he was done fighting on September 22, 2009. But less than three months later, Jackson wanted back in the UFC and requested a bout against Evans. The two met in what would be a fight for the No. 1 contender and a shot at then-champion Mauricio Rua. Jackson fell short in his first fight back and couldn't land that title shot that he wanted. Regardless of the loss, the UFC signed Jackson to a new six-fight contract. His bout against Jones is the third fight of that contract. Rampage Jackson can make a big statement against someone he called the future of MMA. "I just have to say, straight up, I respect you dog. I do think you are the future of MMA, straight-up," Rampage Jackson said to Jon Jones. "I'm keeping it real. But you fought (Mauricio) 'Shogun' Rua when he was rusty as hell. He hadn't fought for a year. He had like two knee surgeries." The level of respect Rampage has for his much younger opponent insinuates that he will be appearing in top form. It's sure to be an interesting fight for MMA Fans.

The Three Most Important Fights In Early MMA - Sports - Martial Arts

While MMA is nearing mainstream acceptance in our society the origins of this sport are recent - and a little dark compared with the refined sport that we see today complete with weight classes, time limits and rules. The first UFC events had none of these. Going back and re-watching these events leaves a bad taste in your mouth from both the production values as well as the lawless and confusing approach to fighting "rules".

The sport today is working very hard to shed the blood sport image that many people regard MMA as. The early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993 the event was promoted like a gladiatorial fight to the death so it is little wonder that this image still exists in the minds of some people today. The truth is that early MMA looked much closer to a street fight than a sporting competition. Even today there is talk of room for changes to the rules such as dropping the current 10 point must scoring system borrowed from boxing or changing weigh ins to fight day to eliminate weight cutting. In the days of the first UFC when they attempted to have as few rules as possible there was ample opportunity for problem to develop.

1) Gerard Gordeau vs. Teila Tuli

In the very first fight in the very first UFC event ever the reigning Savate World World Champion Gerard Gordeau, 6'5" 215lbs faced off against Teila Tuli who was a 440lb former sumo wrestler. The world watched as in less than 30 seconds the striking skill of Gordeau had defended Tuli's charge and after knocking Tuli to the ground, Gordeau landed a roundhouse kick to the side of his face that sent teeth flying into the crowd. Less than 30 seconds into the first event ever. Kicking a downed opponent in the face is no longer allowed in most MMA including the UFC. Teila was not knocked unconscious from the kick and Gerard had two of Tuli's teeth embedded in his foot for the rest of the evening.

2) Remco Pardoel vs. Orlando Wiet

This UFC 2 bout was significant for two important reasons. First of all Wiet weighed in at 5'10" and 170lbs where Remco tipped the scales at 6'4" 260lbs. If it were not for the fact that Orlando Wiet looked like he was genetically engineered in a laboratory fitness experiment perhaps the fight might not have happened at all so big was the size difference in these fighters.

The real story of this fight was the ending. Despite Wiet trying to explode out of bad positions, Remco controlled the fight on the ground with good positioning utilizing his bodyweight advantage and grappling skill. When Remco realized that he could throw an elbow to the side of the head of Weit the fight was over. The first elbow was probing and connected cleanly. The second elbow, with more force behind it, made Wiet go limp. Remco then landed 5 more elbows to the cadaver, er...Wiet, before slowing down and then stopping before looking up to the referee Big John McCarthy with an "Uh oh I killed him" look on his face. In current day MMA the referee has the power to end the fight which is something Big John did not have the authority to do at the time. Good thing Remco decided to stop on his own.

3) Royce Gracie vs. Ken Shamrock

The first ever "superfight" featured Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie fight for the second time at UFC 5. Ken lost the initial meeting of the two at UFC 1 where he tapped due to a choke shortly into the fight. In this fight Ken took a much more cautious game plan and spent most of his energy on not getting submitted and not losing position to Gracie.

After a very slow 31 minutes the fight was declared to have a 5 more minutes of overtime. No winner was determined and there were no judges in place so the fight was scored a draw. This caused two changes in the UFC. The first was that in the following UFC events the referee could, at their discretion, stand the fight up from the ground if there was not enough action. This fight also was the first of many that prompted spectators of the sport to realize that not every fight can be settled in 20 minutes or 30 minutes and that some sort of scoring or judging system might be prudent for the sport.

An honorable mention for the 3 fights that changed the face of current MMA would be the first 3 fights that Royce Gracie had in the UFC. Not that each fight was so spectacular, more the impact and result of the three, in that a slight 176 lb young man could fight and win with supposed martial art world champions much larger than himself. It is hard to imagine MMA today if Royce had not competed in the origins of the UFC.

Cote Has A Lot To Prove - Sports

Every aspiring MMA fighter strives to make it to the UFC to showcase their talents. If they are fortunate enough to have the Big Show knock on their door, they know that a loss or poor showing could result in never getting another invitation back. This certainly has not been the case for Patrick Cote, who has compiled an embarrassing 1-4 record in his UFC career.

"You have to understand that if you're a fighter in the UFC, you're lucky to be there because the UFC is like the NHL, and you can't go higher. So you have to perform well and enjoy your moment here. And if you want to stay here, you have to put on a good show and win your fights," Cote stated.

So how can a fighter that has performed so poorly for the largest MMA organization on the planet manage to get opportunity after opportunity? Well, outside of the Octagon, Cote has managed to fight his way to a respectable 10-4 record, beating the likes of Jason MacDonald, a highly regarded up and coming UFC Middleweight.

"The Octagon was like a big monster for me in this sport. Everywhere else I could beat everybody and I don't have any problems," admitted Cote. The Canadian added, "Even if I beat a very good guy in the organization like Jason MacDonald outside of the UFC, I beat a very good guy, but if I can't win in the UFC, why would they invite me back again?"

Cote was finally able to crack the UFC win column, beating Scott Smith at UFC 67. He now takes his one fight UFC win streak against The Ultimate Fighter Season 3 Middleweight Champion, Kendall Grove at UFC 74. Cote, a former Ultimate Fighter cast member himself, seems confident heading into this weekend's bout.

"He's a very tall guy, but I already fought a guy that tall before at 205 (Ricardeau Francois), so it's not a big deal for me, and I'm pretty sure I'll be stronger and more powerful than him," said Cote of Grove. "I can't see him being strong at 185 being 6-6. The most difficult thing is the height and to find a hole to go inside and do your stuff. But I have good training partners. I have a guy who is 6-5 to train with, a very good Muay Thai guy, so I'll be ready for this fight."

Cote will be entering this fight as a 2-1 underdog, but he has had his back against the wall before.

"My last fight against Scott Smith was do or die for me, and I think this fight with Kendall Grove is the same thing," he said. "I can't lose this fight, I just can't. Losing is never an option for me, but I'm still borderline with the UFC, so I have to keep focused to win my fight."

The 27-year old is very focused and confident heading into the fight, and he credits that to his mental state. "My mental game is my number one skill, and nobody can break me mentally," said Cote. "I know that I have a lot of skills, and in the past I've had bad luck and I made mistakes too during the fights. I'm very confident. I'm always very confident in my skills, but now I have to put all my skills together to win my next fight. I've worked a lot on that, and I'm going to fight not only to win but to get some respect."

His road to gaining respect resumes August 25th at the Mandalay Bay Event Center. The UFC and their fans will be looking on anxiously as Cote continues to prove his worthiness to fight in front of them.

Chuck's Future on Ice - Sports

Even though Chuck Liddell has lost his last two fights, the UFC has lost much more. Chuck Liddell was the face of the UFC for the past four years and they were banking on him to be for many more. Before his blockbuster fight against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 71, you pretty much saw Liddell everywhere. He was on the cover of ESPN the Magazine, did interviews for ESPN, had an entire Best Damn Sports Show Period dedicated to him and he was a special guest star on TV's most popular show amongst the UFC's primary demographic, Entourage.

"Chuck is a bona fide superstar," White says to ESPN the Magazine. "Even in other countries, everybody knows him. When I go to New York with him, he gets mobbed. People scream from their cars."

Some may say that Chuck's last two losses cost the UFC millions in future earnings, expanded national exposure and most importantly, at least one face that millions can recognize and identify with. A casual sports fan could have seen him on Jay Leno and say, "Oh that guy with the mohawk fights in the UFC, what's his name again?" Sure they might not know his name right off the bat, but at least they know what he does.

So the question now is, where does the UFC go from here? Along with what Rampage did to Liddell, Keith Jardine's performance against the former champ on Saturday night has really given the UFC something to think about. Do they continue to bank their future on a 37 year old Liddell, or do they start the torch passing process and push younger fighters to the forefront? Coincidentally, it very well could have already started that same night, when fan favorite Forrest Griffin pulled off a massive upset over the number one ranked Light Heavyweight Mauricio Shogun Rua.

It was announced Saturday night that if Liddell would have won his fight, the long awaited showdown with former Pride Champion Wanderlei Silva was to take place on UFC's December fight card. Now that that fight won't happen, will it be Griffin that gets in the Octagon against Silva? With another win against a top fighter, especially one of Silva's caliber, expect to see Griffin knocking on the door for a title fight soon after.

Saturday was a sad night for Liddell, as he most likely came to the realization that Father Time may have caught up to him. He is seeing the younger and hungrier fighters pass him by at a time when the sport is booming in popularity. With the added depth the UFC has recently added to the division, Liddell may never see another fight before he hangs them up. Assuming that he wins his next three to four fights against the division's top fighters, that will see him challenging for a title at the age of 39? Not likely.

However, the argument can be made that Randy Couture came out of retirement and did it at the tender age of 43. Unfortunately for Liddell, there are two major differences between the two. Couture came back to fight in a Heavyweight division that is not nearly as strong as the 205's, and more importantly, Couture is a physical specimen. He has been taking care of his body for years and that has allowed him to extend his career, where as Liddell looks like he just stepped out of a bar, which may very well be possible.

As sad as it is to say, it is time for the UFC to move on. They need to start planning for the future and there is no better time to start then now. Let's take a look at the fighter profile that the UFC likes to market; they speak English, are charismatic, and provide exciting fights by always looking to finish. Griffin fits this mold perfectly and the UFC better start to move in his direction. Sorry Chuck, but the future started on Saturday night.

Let's All Blame Dana White For State of MMA - Is Everything That's Wrong With MMA Dana's Fault? - Health

I watched a CBC piece on MMA, fighter pay, health care, a pension plan, along with the discussion of any fighters union. The piece basically asserted Dana White is your most evil man on the planet thinking that grown men, who also are actually the fiercest warriors on earth, are being used, abused, and started advantage of.But is the idea that really how it really is? Is Dana White the person answerable for this all?Dana White gets a number of unwarranted hate for things people let slide when it's other organizations doing them, yet i think it really is ridiculous. People blame Dana White for there being no fighters union, people blame him for lower level fighters making peanuts, they blame him for nearly everything that's wrong with MMA. It's amazing with me which the face of recent MMA, your partner who helped build the sport we love, is likewise the man everybody uses being a scapegoat for your state of things within a Mixed Martial Arts world.I'm sure most of the peopl e who look at this will disagree with me, but for me don't really care, this is actually the truth, and it has to become said.Everybody is speaking about the $275 million the UFC made in 2008, they compare that into the $27 million the UFC paid it's fighters in 2008 and they scream corruption, greed, and theft. First on our list, the huge amount paid towards the fighters is the thing that goes on record when their official pay, Dana White and several fighters have spoken out concerning the extra cash bonuses fighters receive in the event that they put upon a superb show. Sometimes approximately $50,000. When that point is remarked, people usually respond with, "that may not be guaranteed income though." In case the fighters are so upset about this, they will be able to be around the corner.Let's just say for arguments sake that the UFC paid $40 million with their fighters in 2008. Subtract $40 million from $275 million, you aquire $235 million. This is where the situation li es, the UFC made $235 million in profit in 2008, along with the fighters only made $40 million. I can understand the frustration, but could you blame Dana White along with the Fertitta Brothers? They got into a hobby where they solely have to pay the athletes. The beauty of MMA is the idea that there exists there is no other employees, owners just agree to pay the fighters and pocket the remaining. Another plus is your absence of productions costs along with the proven fact that it's doesn't cost any money helping put MMA on PPV.If you add that to your fact that because MMA is known as a new sport, it's exempt from any and all taxes and bring into consideration that advertising, marketing, and venue fees will be waived by generous people who run businesses due to the young age of many sport, you actually is not angry with them, is it possible? They saw a chance and that they seized it. They realized they could put 20-25 high caliber MMA shows on every single year without the need to invest anything at all into anything except fighter pay. That's smart business. I wish I had known in advance which it didn't cost anything to run a premiere MMA show, I might've found myself in the work myself. It appears to be strange though that all of such other shows will need due to business, or maybe it's just the UFC that will get to operate their shows for free, who could say?Enter the blame on Dana White for there not becoming fighters union? While I disagree with many different stuff Dana White says and does, a fighters union isn't his responsibility, nor is it the responsibility of any MMA promoter/owner/president. The creation of any fighters union is in the hands of the fighters, but conduct the fighters need a fighters union? Randy Couture sure does, but who else? I'm sure loads of fighters wouldn't mind a fighters union, except a number of guys seem information with training their own personal contracts and that they seem content doing that in the UFC . Maybe that's just me though.Near to pensions/health care/etc... Where's Afflictions Health Care plan? Does DREAM present you with a pension plan to it's fighters? I'm asking, due the the fact i don't know. But I'm eager to bet that they don't. It's not just Dana White and the UFC, it's MMA generally.Don't get me wrong, If i recall the UFC are capable to buy to pay for their fighters more, but for me do not that they have to. They pay the highest guys the important bucks, they pay the fighters promoting the pay-per-views what remedy they deserve, and they pay the guys who will be trying to become the guys selling the pay-per-views whatever they deserve. There isn't any problem here. For those of you who still want to crucify Dana White along with the UFC for your way they pay their fighters, consider the fighter finance Affliction's inaugural event:Affliction Banned Pay:Fedor Emelianenko ($300,000/$300,000 to indicate and no win bonus) def. Although numbers certainly are a little off mainly because that it was Afflictions first event and this had little to no filler fights, it only has shown that it is really not only the UFC paying their lower level fighters peanuts. Surely that the Dana White haters will have some excuse because of this, save your breath; the proof is within a numbers. I'm really curious to see precisely how the payouts keep Affliction 2. But I'm also curious why we an organization that's eager to pay Tim Sylvia $800,000 is simply prepared to pay Savant Young $7000 to show? In fairness, what i mean between the amount the very best guy made about this card and the quantity of the end guy made is much larger than any UFC in recent memory.Don't take this text most likely for me blindly following Dana White along with the UFC, I'm incredibly critical analysts a nd some of many stuff they do. I did not agree with everything Dana does; the complete Jon Fitch/UFC 2009 Undisputed Mac game and pc game thing was stupid, trash talking former fighters and champions because they left your organization is pretty stupid, but building MMA to a point where we can whine about what fighters make due to the reason that the sport may be that successful isn't.

Mixed Martial Arts Grows In Popularity - Sports

There once was a time when boxing ruled the sports landscape. The heavyweight champion was the most feared and famous athlete on the planet. Boxers like Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Mike Tyson were household names throughout the world.

However, over the last decade, a sport with history and honor has lost its popularity to upstart sports like mixed martial arts (MMA). The decline of elite fighters in the heavyweight division and the lack of knockouts have led many young men to look for action and excitement in sports like MMA.

Because of the decline of boxing, mixed martial arts has taken over and has become the sport of choice for the age 18-34 demographic and put the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on course to join the ranks of elite sports leagues like the National Basketball Association and the National Football League.

"MMA resounds with 18-34 (year olds) because that age range has a shorter attention span than other age groups. They buy video games, fast cars, cool clothes, all on credit because they want it now. They want instant gratification. In the UFC, the normal bout consists of three five-minute rounds," said long-time fan Giam Sigaud, 35, of Houston.

According to UFC.com, MMA is an intense and evolving combat sport in which competitors use interdisciplinary forms of fighting that include jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and other techniques to their strategic and tactical advantage in a supervised match.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship began in 1993, but mixed martial arts dates back to the Olympic Games in Athens, according to UFC.com. "About 80 years ago, a Brazilian form of MMA known as Vale Tudo (anything goes) sparked local interest in the sport."

Now that interest is felt throughout the world as the UFC now offers 12 to 14 live pay-per-view events annually through cable and satellite providers. Recently, a UFC event in Columbus, Ohio attracted more than 19,000 people--the largest audience in North America to witness a mixed martial arts event.

More than 4.7 million viewers tuned in to see UFC 75, the first ever title bout on Spike TV. On a Saturday night, it outdrew college football among young men.

Viewers of UFC 75 saw Quinton "Rampage" Jackson defeat Dan Henderson to unify the UFC and PRIDE titles in the 205-lb weight-class. Cheick Kong defeated Mirko Cro Cop and Houston Alexander knocked out Alessio Sakara in one minute of the first round.

In the title fight, Jackson became the first man to unify a major title with a five-round victory. Judges scored the bout 48-47 and 49-46 twice for Memphis, Tenn. native.

Fans attribute the success of the UFC to clever marketing such as the reality show "The Ultimate Fighter," because fans can become acquainted with the athletes and begin to follow their careers.

The million-dollar question is why are violent sports so popular among young men?

"I suppose I like it for the same reason you rubber-neck at a traffic accident. You want to see how bad it can get. You want to see how bad the knockout will be or how slick a submission will be. You want to speculate what you might do in a similar circumstance," said Sigaud.

To many fans, mixed martial arts have already surpassed boxing in popularity, and some feel it will not be long before it is on par with mainstays like football, baseball and basketball.

The steroids scandal in Major League Baseball, along with the NFL's image crisis and the NBA gambling scandal are many reasons why sports fans are turning to alternative sports like MMA. Questionable decisions and a lack of star quality have led to the UFC regularly outperforming boxing in its pay-per-view intake.

With such quick success, it seems as if the UFC will soon revival the three big sports leagues in popularity and profit.

And for those who have not yet caught the MMA bug, Sigaud asks "them to watch the reality show from the beginning. The UFC packages the fights amidst bad blood while living with each other and training with each other. Also going online and watching some of the signature fights helps. I would (also) ask them to... watch a pay-per-view event or a free night on Spike TV."

After watching one fight, the UFC is certain that it will not be the last.

The Trending Popularity of MMA - Outdoors

The Ultimate Fighting Championship

It's no secret that martial arts has indeed come a long way over the years. Many years ago, Bruce Lee helped the arts become even more famous, when he developed his style of Jeet Kune Do. He participated in several movies, showing the world his speed and finesse. Since then, movies have been a popular way to showcase martial arts skills.

Back in the early 1990s, something known as the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) came along to take things one step further. Even though there have been other competitions similar to the UFC, none of them had the flair and the dedication as UFC did. When it first began, the UFC paired different styles and different weight classes against each other. Any man, any size, anything goes.

The result were exciting fights with varying results. The first ever champion was a man from Brazil named Royce Gracie. Gracie was the first to introduce Brazilian Jui-Jitsu in this way, opening up the eyes of everyone who witness him fight. After the first UFC tournament, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu was instantly viewed as the best martial art. Royce weighed under 200 pounds, and he was completely dominating people nearly 3 times his size.

Gracie would go on to win UFC 2 and 4 as well. He was the most dominating in the sport, and opened the eyes of everyone across the world. In UFC 3, he didn't lose, although he ran into a very tough fighter who nearly beat him. Gracie came back in UFC 5 for a superfight match up with Ken Shamrock, which would go the distance and end in a draw.

Other fighters have done exceptionally well in the UFC, although none of them had the impact as Royce Gracie. Fighters like Brock Lesnar, Anderson Silva, are current names you might recognize as just a few of the most popular fighters in the world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts),

MMA has eclipsed boxing as the most popular one on one contact sport. The UFC having made the biggest impact so far. In the beginning, there were no rules and no judges, just one on one fights until someone either tapped out, got knocked out, or the ref through in the towel. Fighters also fought in a tournament style as well, which took 3 fights to win the championship.

Over the years, there were several changes. The UFC would start with judges after a few years, along with eliminating the tournaments. The fights would eventually go to one on one, which was great for the fans. Although the fights didn't have time limits in the beginning, they do now. The non title fights are three 5 minute rounds, while the title fights are five 5 minute rounds.

If a fight goes to the judges, the judges decide the winner. There are three judges, which normally change with each different UFC. Judges are there do determine the winner if there is no knockout or submission, while the ref is there to protect the fighters. The referee can stop a fight as well, if he decides a fighter is unable to defend themselves.

With all the changes in the rules of the UFC, it's only a matter of time before the MMA gains even more popularity. It is more popular today than it ever has been. Mixed Martial Arts is very popular and the UFC is the most popular fighting arena of all.

The Biggest International Main Event Of All - Sports

Language, culture, oceans and several other obstructions act as hurdles in the competition to create closure ties between several nations on the planet however the UFC is helping to connect these barriers and the UFC 122 Main Event in Oberhausen will be the most international MMA event ever.

MMA and fighting sports on the whole are globally comprehended and relished by sports buffs across the globe and folks from dozens "if not hundreds- of nations will tune into the UFC 122 probabilities competition. The sport already is made up of fighting styles resulting from several different nations including the u.s., Japan, Brazil, Thailand, and Russia. Now, after almost 2 decades of tournaments, the UFC is becoming progressively more really global in nature.

On top of that, this is just the UFC's second event in Germany and the second in continental Europe. Germany has in fact prohibited the transmission of the sport as of March of this year, a judgement that the UFC intends to fight. Even though it will not be displayed on German television, it will still be shown by means of tape delay the same day on Spike TV. However, hosting the sport in continental Europe only 1 month after it was hosted in the United Kingdom is a great way to boost the UFC's international status as a legitimate sport.

In the 11 matches on slate for the UFC 122 betting action there will be 11 diverse nationalities represented. In any UFC Main Event there is also a excellent deal of diversity in terms of the fighters' nationalities however the UFC 122 probabilities event will be taking it to yet another level. There will be 7 competitors from the US, the most by a extensive margin but after that it's really a mix bag of competitors. Yushin Okami will represent Japan in the Main Event against American middleweight Nate Marquardt with the victor earning a prospect at the middleweight title against the famous Anderson Silva.

There will also be an Italian fighter (Alesssio Sakara) and a handful of German competitors. In reality, it's a tad surprising that that there are not more German competitors on this fight card as the event is being put on in Germany. Like we saw in the UFC 121 Main Event in London, the lineup was loaded with English competitors whereas the UFC 122 betting action contains only 3 German competitors. There will also be 3 English competitors in the UFC 122 Main Event symbolizing Europe.

Brazil will of course be represented too as there will be two Brazilian competitors looking to make a name for themselves on the MMA scene "just as there is in nearly every MMA event. There's also a lone fighter from Belarus. And a single fighter from New Zealand, Poland, Croatia and the Czech Republic.

In reality, the UFC 122 Main Event will look more like a UN meeting than an MMA event but one time the action gets underway and the fighting kicks off it will not matter where anyone is from as the action in the Octagon will take center stage.

MMA Monopoly - Sports

Over the past 18 years, there has been an uprising in the world of combat sports. The organization known as the UFC has grown into the largest MMA promotion company worldwide. In 1993, the organization was nothing more than what appeared to be a traveling circus of lethal fighters. Unable to hold events in most states of the USA and countries around the world, no one expected the UFC to have a long lifeline. Now nearly two decades later, it has grown into a massive phenomenon, almost surpassing the fading boxing world. Its all a far cry from the beginning. The promotion started by holding fight events in small arenas and then distributing the footage on VHS. This may have been lucrative to begin with, but after a short while, the promoters started to realize that it could not continue to sustain this success without developing the format. In 2001 the owners at the time were bought out by two executives, brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta. They placed boxing promoter Dana White in charge of the franchise as President.

In the last ten years the sport has grown from obscurity to become some of the most watched sporting events in the world. Since the acquisition of the UFC, Dana White and the Fertitta Bros have monopolized the MMA world. The past ten years have seen them buying out most rival firms. The most successful of these being the Pride FC franchise operating in Japan. They saw this as the biggest threat to the success of the UFC and did exactly what any other profitable organization would do, performed a take over. This angered most fight fans, as when this occurred, the UFC took most of the fighters on the Pride roster and left them without any fight contracts for some time. This monopoly on MMA has continued over the past few years with take overs of most major outfits. The most recent being the acquisition of the Strikeforce brand. This could lead to problems for certain fighters, a number of which have been banned from appearing in the UFC. These fighters subsequently joined St rikeforce. Now with the take over complete, no one is sure what will happen to these fighters.

One of the main examples would be the rising British star Paul Daley. He was handed a lifetime ban in May 2010, by the UFC for what could only be described as a cheap shot, punching Josh Koschek after the bell had sounded for the end of the 3rd and final round. This left Daley without much options for future fights. Having fought in several promotions around the world, Strikeforce then announced that Daley would fight the current Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz on the 9th April 2011. The UFC purchased Strikeforce only after this fight had been announced. So what happens if Daley wins? What happens if he keeps winning? It is believed that Strikeforce is to continue running as its own entity with CEO Scott Coker in charge. This is said to be because there is still current contracts that need to be honored.

So, for speculation sake, what happens if Paul Daley wins the Championship? When the current contracts have ended for Strikeforce, what happens to their current champions? Im sure they will be offered some sort of fast track to the title shot, but what about Daley? Will he fight in the UFC again? Who knows, but one thing we do know is that the UFC will continue to dominate this market and buy out anyone who tries to rival their organization. Does this mean that the UFC will have the biggest and best fights with the most interesting fighters present? I don't believe so. We may see some entertaining fights, but I don't think that the UFC can legitimately say they have the World Champions if they don't actually allow all the best fighters in the world to compete. Im not saying I want to see Paul Daley given another shot, but the UFC cannot go on claiming to have the real champions when fighters such as him and Fedor Emelianenko are not able to compete for their place amongst the rankings. Perhaps the way to go about this is not to offer a contract binding the fighters to a specific promotion but instead offer them open contracts for the fighters to decide where they will get the best deal. This way, we the fans, can still watch the best fights only this way the fighters will also get a better deal for themselves.

This could never happen though as it seems to go against everything the UFC have worked towards, lining up a roster full of talented fighters unable to work within any other organizations, leaving them to wait for the UFC to offer the opportunity to fight again. This needs to stop now so that the fans can have an unbiased view of the sport in general. Until then we just have to make do with what we currently receive.
