UFC 24 takes MMA into 21st Century - Sports - Martial Arts

The UFC is known as one of the premier Mixed Martial Arts fighting leagues in the world. While it is well known and well respected now, it was not always regarded as a serious sport. The popularity of the sport has grown a lot over the years. Much of the growth of the sport has come since the turn of the century.

The first UFC event of 2000 was UFC 24. This event was known as First Defense. The event took place in the Lake Charles Civic Center in Lake Charles, Louisiana. This event followed UFC 24 and brought the UFC back to the United States after their event in Japan.

This event was historic because some of the UFC fighters of the future had their first matches in this event. There were several fighters such as Ian Freeman, Dave Menne and Shonie Carter. This was also the first time that Jens Pulver would fight on television as the first fight of his career took place off of television at UFC 22.

The name of the event came from the main event that was scheduled to take place in the fight. The fight was supposed to be a title fight between the two heavyweight fighters Kevin Randleman and Pedro Rizzo. While the fight between these two fighters was highly anticipated, it actually did not end up happening. A freak accident happened during warm-ups that caused an injury to one of the fighter. Randleman was walking and slipped on the concrete floor. When he fell to the ground he hit his head and was knocked unconscious. Fortunately they were able to bring him to the hospital whether he was taken care of. He sustained a concussion in the accident. Ultimately the fight was rescheduled for a future UFC event.

On the preliminary card there were fights between Shonie Carter and Brad Gumm and also Scot Adams and Ian Freeman. The fight between Carter and Gumm was decided by deision as Carter dominated the match through two rounds. It was a unanimous decision. The second fight was a heavyweight bough and Adams took the fight by way of submission just 3 minutes into the first round of the fight.

The Main Card fights were as follows: Jens Pulver vs. David Velasquez, Bob Cook vs. Tiki Ghosn, David Menne vs. Fabiano Iha, Lance Gibson vs. Jermaine Andre and Tedd Williams vs. Steve Judson.

Pulver won his fight by TKO in the second round of the fight. Cook won by submission with a rear naked choke in the second round. Dave Menne won by unanimous decision 15 minutes into the fight. Lance Kibson won by KO in the third round. The final fight was won by Tedd Williams. The fight was won by TKO. The referee was forced to stop the fight due to strikes in the first round of fighting. Ultimately this was a very successful UFC Event. The next event that would take place would be UFC 25 and would bring the UFC back to Japan again.
